कहानी की शुरुआत कमल दास से होती है, जो एक बैंक में कैशियर है और एक अजीब समस्या लेकर ब्योमकेश बक्शी के पास आता है। कुछ साल पहले, कमल ने एक मकान का निचला हिस्सा किराए पर लिया था, जिसका मालिक अक्षय मंडल नाम का एक रहस्यमयी व्यक्ति था। उसके काम-धंधे के बारे में किसी को ठीक से पता नहीं था।

एक रात अचानक अक्षय मंडल कहीं चला जाता है। जाते-जाते वह कमल से कहता है कि अगर वह एक हफ्ते में वापस नहीं आया, तो कमल पूरे मकान का इस्तेमाल कर सकता है और किराया उसके बैंक खाते में जमा कर दे। यह बात थोड़ी अजीब जरूर थी, लेकिन कमल के लिए फायदे की थी।

लेकिन कुछ ही दिनों बाद, पूरे घर में एक भयानक बदबू फैल जाती है। जांच करने पर पता चलता है कि ऊपर वाले हिस्से में एक लाश पड़ी है। वह लाश हरिहर सिंह की होती है, जो गैरकानूनी धंधों में शामिल था। अब शक सीधे अक्षय मंडल पर जाता है—जो पहले ही गायब हो चुका है।

समय बीतता है और अक्षय का कोई पता नहीं चलता। कमल अपने परिवार को बुलाकर पूरे मकान में रहने लगता है और लगभग एक साल तक सब कुछ सामान्य रहता है।

फिर अचानक परेशानी शुरू होती है। एक अजनबी औरत आकर मकान पर अपना हक जताती है। उसके बाद कुछ धमकी भरे संकेत भी मिलने लगते हैं। कमल डर जाता है—उसे लगता है कि कोई इस मकान पर कब्जा करना चाहता है। वह अपनी सुरक्षा बढ़ाता है, यहां तक कि एक खतरनाक कुत्ता भी रख लेता है।

इसी बीच एक नई समस्या खड़ी हो जाती है। कमल और उसका परिवार तीर्थ यात्रा पर जाना चाहते हैं। लेकिन अगर वे घर खाली छोड़ देते हैं, तो डर है कि कोई उस पर कब्जा कर सकता है। और अगर नहीं जाते, तो परिवार की इच्छा अधूरी रह जाएगी।

जब ब्योमकेश खुद उस मकान को देखने जाता है, तो उसकी नजर एक अजीब चीज पर पड़ती है—दरवाजे के ऊपर लगी एक घोड़े की नाल। पहली नजर में यह साधारण लगती है, लेकिन उसमें कुछ ऐसा है जो उसे सोचने पर मजबूर करता है। धीरे-धीरे एक शक जन्म लेता है।

The story begins when Kamal Das, a bank cashier, comes to Byomkesh Bakshi with a strange and troubling situation. A few years earlier, Kamal had rented the ground floor of a house owned by a man named Akshay Mondal—a quiet but mysterious individual whose activities were never clearly known.

One night, Akshay suddenly left the house, telling Kamal that if he did not return within a week, Kamal could use the entire property and deposit the rent into his bank account. This unusual arrangement seemed like a stroke of luck—until just days later, a foul smell led to the discovery of a dead body inside the house. The victim was identified as Harihar Singh, a criminal involved in illegal trade, and suspicion immediately fell on Akshay, who had vanished without a trace.

With no sign of Akshay, Kamal eventually moved his family into the entire house and began living there peacefully. Months passed without incident. But then, things started to change.

A mysterious woman appeared, claiming rights over the house. Soon after, anonymous threats followed. Kamal grew increasingly uneasy, fearing that someone was trying to take control of the property. To protect his home, he even kept a guard dog and considered additional security.
