Eighteen-year-old Suman is the youngest of Mahendra Thakur’s three children. She studies in school and has two close friends, one of whom belongs to the Dalit community. Mahendra disapproves of this friendship because of caste differences. Suman is a bright student and consistently performs well in her studies. The three friends share everything with one another and enjoy reading romantic stories.

In her next examination, Suman scores only 51%, leaving her parents disappointed. When her friend Niharika asks what happened, Suman reveals that she is in love with a young man named Manav, who belongs to the Dalit community. Her friends warn her that her father and brothers will never accept the relationship and that it could be dangerous for both of them.

One day, one of Mahendra Thakur’s associates spots Suman and Manav together in Meerut and informs him. Mahendra beats Suman, while his sons, Sushil and Anurag, brutally assault Manav. The couple stops meeting and speaking to each other. After three months, Mahendra allows Suman to go out with her friends again. Suman secretly contacts Manav over the phone and plans to meet him at her home during the night.

सुमन ठाकुर महेंद्र सिंह की बेटी है। महेंद्र के दो बेटे भी हैं, सुशील और अनुराग। सुमन की दो खास सहेलियाँ हैं, जिनमें से एक निहारिका उसकी ही जाति की है जबकि दूसरी सहेली दलित समुदाय से है। महेंद्र और उसके परिवार को उसका घर आना-जाना पसंद नहीं है और उसके साथ भेदभावपूर्ण व्यवहार किया जाता है।

सुमन पढ़ाई में बहुत अच्छी है और सामान्यतः अच्छे अंक प्राप्त करती है। तीनों सहेलियों में गहरी दोस्ती है और वे अपनी हर बात एक-दूसरे से साझा करती हैं। उन्हें प्रेम कहानियाँ पढ़ना भी बहुत पसंद है।

अपनी अगली परीक्षा में सुमन के लगभग 50 प्रतिशत अंक आते हैं, जिससे सभी हैरान हो जाते हैं। निहारिका के पूछने पर सुमन बताती है कि उसे मानव नाम के एक युवक से प्रेम हो गया है। मानव एक लुहार परिवार से है और सुमन उससे विवाह करना चाहती है। उसकी दोनों सहेलियाँ उसे समझाती हैं कि यदि उसके पिता और भाइयों को इस रिश्ते के बारे में पता चल गया, तो गंभीर परिणाम हो सकते हैं।

महेंद्र ठाकुर का एक आदमी दोनों को मेरठ के एक होटल में देख लेता है और इसकी सूचना उसे दे देता है। इसके बाद महेंद्र सुमन की पिटाई करता है और उसके दोनों बेटे मानव को बुरी तरह मारते हैं। डर के कारण दोनों मिलना-जुलना और बातचीत करना बंद कर देते हैं।

तीन महीने बाद महेंद्र सुमन को फिर से बाहर जाने की अनुमति देता है। सुमन निहारिका के फोन से मानव से संपर्क करती है और उसे रात में अपने घर मिलने के लिए बुलाती है ताकि दोनों वहाँ से भाग सकें।

Inside Story: यह कहानी आगरा की एक वास्तविक घटना से प्रेरित है। ठाकुर समुदाय से संबंध रखने वाले अशोक सिकारवार की 19 वर्षीय बेटी रुचि को दलित समुदाय के युवक से प्रेम संबंध के कारण उसके पिता द्वारा गोली मार दी गई थी।
