The story begins with the introduction of Byomkesh Bakshi, a young and sharp-minded man who calls himself a “Satyanveshi”—a seeker of truth. Unlike professional detectives, he does not work for money or fame, but out of curiosity and a deep desire to solve complex mysteries. He approaches the police with confidence, claiming he can help solve a series of murders taking place in Calcutta’s Chinatown—murders that have already left the authorities confused.
Now Byomkesh is searching for a place to stay and ends up at a modest boarding house called Anukul Lodge, and when Anukul Babu, the owner of the lodge asks his name, he introduces him as Manoj Kumar. There, he meets a quiet, polite man named “Ajit Kumar,” who requests to share his room. Ajit agrees, unaware that this man is actually Byomkesh himself, working undercover.
The lodge is small but filled with peculiar residents—each with their own habits and secrets. Doctor, Anukul Babu, who treats patients kindly and even gives free medicine to tenants. There are other boarders too—some quiet, some strange, and some who avoid interaction altogether. The atmosphere feels normal on the surface, but something about the place feels… off.
Meanwhile, the city is gripped by fear. Murders are happening frequently, and rumors spread about a hidden cocaine trade operating in the area, possibly using poor people as carriers.
Then, one morning, a shocking incident occurs.
A resident of the lodge, Ishwar Babu, is found dead in his room.
At first glance, it appears to be suicide. The doctor suggests that Ishwar, already ill and mentally disturbed, may have taken his own life. But Byomkesh is not convinced. The nature of the death doesn’t feel right. The details don’t match a suicide.
He begins to observe more carefully.
Small things start to stand out—the behavior of the residents, their routines, their reactions. Ishwar had seemed unusually anxious before his death, as if he had discovered something dangerous. And the doctor, though calm and helpful on the surface, appears to be hiding something deeper.
Then suspicion takes a sudden turn.
Byomkesh himself is arrested under the name “Manoj Kumar,” accused of Ishwar’s murder. It seems like the investigation has taken a wrong direction—or perhaps someone is deliberately trying to mislead the police.
But Byomkesh remains calm.
Because for him, this is all part of the larger puzzle.
As he continues his secret investigation, the truth begins to take shape—a hidden network, a dangerous secret, and a man who is far more than he appears to be.

Suresh Bhagwat played a negative role in the episode and was again appeared as Byomkesh Bose in Episode 10- Upsanhaar. We can say that Unpsanhar was the sequel of this episode and he comes back to take revenge from Byomkesh for his imprisonment.

कहानी शुरू होती है एक अनोखे व्यक्ति से—ब्योमकेश बक्शी, जो खुद को जासूस नहीं बल्कि “सत्यान्वेषी” यानी सच की खोज करने वाला कहता है। वह किसी पेशेवर जासूस की तरह काम नहीं करता, बल्कि अपनी बुद्धि और तर्क के दम पर जटिल मामलों को सुलझाने का शौक रखता है। वह पुलिस से संपर्क करता है और दावा करता है कि वह कलकत्ता के चाइना टाउन में हो रही रहस्यमयी हत्याओं को सुलझाने में मदद कर सकता है।
ब्योमकेश रहने के लिए जगह ढूंढते हुए “अनुकूल लॉज” पहुंचता है और जब अनुकूल लॉज के मालिक अनुकूल बाबू ब्योमकेश से उसका नाम पूछते हैं तो वो अपना नाम मनोज कुमार बताता है। वहां उसकी मुलाकात एक शांत और साधारण दिखने वाले व्यक्ति “अजीत कुमार” से होती है, जो उसके साथ कमरा शेयर करने की इच्छा जताता है। अजीत मान जाता है—लेकिन उसे यह नहीं पता कि यही मनोज असल में ब्योमकेश है, जो अपनी असली पहचान छुपाकर जांच कर रहा है।
लॉज में कई अजीब किरदार रहते हैं—हर कोई अपने आप में अलग और थोड़ा रहस्यमयी। डॉक्टर अनुकूल बाबू, जो सभी का इलाज करते हैं और पैसे भी नहीं लेते… कुछ किरायेदार जो ज्यादा बात नहीं करते… और कुछ जिनकी आदतें असामान्य हैं। ऊपर से सब सामान्य लगता है, लेकिन माहौल में एक अजीब सा तनाव है।
शहर में लगातार हत्याएं हो रही हैं, और खबरें यह भी कहती हैं कि इलाके में कोकीन का एक गुप्त कारोबार चल रहा है, जिसमें गरीब लोगों का इस्तेमाल किया जा रहा है।
फिर एक दिन लॉज के अंदर ही एक चौंकाने वाली घटना होती है।
ईश्वर बाबू, जो लंबे समय से वहां रह रहे थे, अपने कमरे में मृत पाए जाते हैं।
पहली नजर में इसे आत्महत्या माना जाता है। डॉक्टर भी यही कहते हैं कि उनकी मानसिक हालत ठीक नहीं थी और उन्होंने खुद अपनी जान ले ली। लेकिन ब्योमकेश को यह बात सही नहीं लगती। मौत के तरीके में कुछ ऐसा है, जो इसे आत्महत्या नहीं बनने देता।
वह चुपचाप जांच शुरू करता है।
छोटी-छोटी बातें उसे सोचने पर मजबूर करती हैं—ईश्वर बाबू का घबराया हुआ व्यवहार, कुछ छुपे हुए डर, और खासकर डॉक्टर का अजीब शांत रवैया। जैसे वह कुछ जानता हो… या छुपा रहा हो।
तभी मामला अचानक पलट जाता है।
पुलिस “मनोज कुमार” यानी ब्योमकेश को ही ईश्वर बाबू की हत्या के आरोप में गिरफ्तार कर लेती है। ऐसा लगता है कि जांच गलत दिशा में जा रही है… या फिर किसी ने जानबूझकर सच्चाई को मोड़ दिया है।
लेकिन ब्योमकेश शांत रहता है।
क्योंकि उसके लिए यह सिर्फ एक केस नहीं… बल्कि एक बड़ी पहेली है।
जैसे-जैसे वह सच्चाई के करीब पहुंचता है, यह साफ होने लगता है कि इस लॉज के अंदर ही कोई गहरा राज छुपा है—एक खतरनाक खेल, जिसमें धोखा, अपराध और पहचान सब एक साथ जुड़े हुए हैं।
और इस साधारण दिखने वाली जगह में…
