कोलकाता के चाइना टाउन इलाके में लगातार रहस्यमयी हत्याएँ हो रही थीं। पुलिस परेशान थी क्योंकि हर बार मारे जाने वाले लोग गरीब और मामूली दिखने वाले होते, लेकिन उनके संबंध किसी बड़े अवैध धंधे से होने का शक था। तभी एक युवा व्यक्ति पुलिस कमिश्नर के पास पहुँचता है और दावा करता है कि वह इन हत्याओं का सच पता लगा सकता है। उसका नाम था ब्योमकेश बख्शी — जो खुद को “जासूस” नहीं बल्कि “सत्यन्वेषी” कहता था।
अपनी जांच के लिए ब्योमकेश “मनोज कुमार” नाम से एक छोटे से लॉज में रहने पहुँचता है। वहीं उसकी मुलाकात संघर्ष कर रहे लेखक अजीत से होती है, जो बाद में उसका सबसे करीबी साथी बनता है। लॉज का मालिक और होम्योपैथ डॉक्टर अनुकूल बाबू बाहर से बेहद शांत और मददगार दिखाई देता था।
लेकिन लॉज का माहौल अजीब था। आसपास आए दिन खून होते रहते थे। रात में संदिग्ध लोग आते-जाते दिखाई देते और कुछ किरायेदार हमेशा डरे हुए नजर आते। इन्हीं में से एक था ईश्वर बाबू, जो अचानक बेहद घबराया हुआ रहने लगा था।
एक रात ईश्वर बाबू अपने कमरे में मृत पाए जाते हैं। उनका गला बेरहमी से काटा गया था। डॉक्टर अनुकूल इसे आत्महत्या साबित करने की कोशिश करता है, लेकिन ब्योमकेश तुरंत समझ जाता है कि यह हत्या है।
धीरे-धीरे ब्योमकेश को एहसास होता है कि असली अपराधी कोई बाहरी आदमी नहीं बल्कि उसी लॉज के अंदर मौजूद है। ब्योमकेश खुद को खतरे में डालकर असली अपराधी को पकड़ने की योजना बनाता है। वह जानबूझकर बीमार होने का नाटक करता है ताकि कातिल उसे भी रास्ते से हटाने की कोशिश करे।
आधी रात को जब अंधेरे कमरे में कोई छुरा लेकर बिस्तर की तरफ बढ़ता है, तब पूरा रहस्य अचानक खुलने लगता है। लेकिन उस रात जो सच सामने आता है, वह अजीत की जिंदगी हमेशा के लिए बदल देता है।

Suresh Bhagwat played a negative role in the episode and was again appeared as Byomkesh Bose in Episode 10- Upsanhaar. We can say that Unpsanhar was the sequel of this episode and he comes back to take revenge from Byomkesh for his imprisonment.
A series of mysterious murders in Calcutta’s Chinatown leaves the police completely baffled. The victims are mostly poor and unnoticed people, but the pattern suggests that a dangerous criminal network is operating secretly inside the city. At this moment, a young man named Byomkesh Bakshi approaches the police commissioner and offers to investigate the case independently. Instead of calling himself a detective, he introduces himself as a “Satyanveshi” — a seeker of truth.
To investigate secretly, Byomkesh takes the fake identity of “Manoj Kumar” and moves into a small boarding house called Anukul Lodge. There he meets a struggling writer named Ajit, who soon becomes his closest companion. The lodge owner, Dr. Anukul, appears to be a calm and generous homeopathic doctor who often treats poor tenants for free.
But the atmosphere inside the lodge feels unsettling. Murders frequently occur nearby, suspicious strangers move around at night, and some tenants behave as if they are hiding terrible secrets. One resident in particular, Ishwar Babu, suddenly becomes nervous and frightened for unknown reasons.
One morning, Ishwar Babu is found dead inside his locked room with his throat brutally slit. Dr. Anukul quickly suggests that it was suicide, but Byomkesh immediately realizes that the death was actually murder.
As the investigation deepens, Byomkesh uncovers clues pointing toward a secret cocaine smuggling network operating through Chinatown. Poor servants and unemployed men are being used to transport drugs across the city, while anyone who learns too much about the operation mysteriously disappears.
Slowly, Byomkesh begins suspecting that the real mastermind is not an outsider at all, but someone living inside the lodge itself. To expose the killer, Byomkesh deliberately places himself in danger. Pretending to fall sick, he creates a trap and waits for the murderer to strike again during the middle of the night.
As a shadow carrying a knife quietly approaches the bed in the darkness, the truth behind the Chinatown murders finally begins to unfold. But what Ajit discovers that night changes his life forever.
