लेकिन कुछ ही दिनों बाद अखबार में खबर छपती है — सत्यकाम दास की आधी रात को गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी गई है।
ब्योमकेश जांच शुरू करते हैं और सत्यकाम के घर पहुंचते हैं। घर में उसके सौतेले पिता उशानाथ बाबू, उनकी पत्नी, भतीजा शीतांशु, भतीजी चुमकी और नौकर सहदेव रहते थे। सभी के बयान अलग-अलग थे, लेकिन हर किसी के चेहरे पर कोई न कोई छिपा हुआ डर दिखाई देता था।
पोस्टमार्टम रिपोर्ट बताती है कि गोली पीछे से चली थी और नीचे से ऊपर की दिशा में लगी थी। सबसे रहस्यमयी चीज थी दरवाजे पर चिपका हुआ एक छोटा-सा चमकीला “रूपहला चक्का”, जिसे देखकर सत्यकाम झुक गया था।
धीरे-धीरे ब्योमकेश को एहसास होता है कि यह हत्या सिर्फ गुस्से या बदले की नहीं थी। इसके पीछे वर्षों पुराना पारिवारिक रहस्य छिपा था।
जांच के दौरान ब्योमकेश को एक पुराना “प्रीति उपहार” कार्ड मिलता है, जिसमें उशानाथ बाबू और सुचित्रा की शादी की तारीख छपी होती है। तभी उन्हें सत्यकाम की बताई जन्मतिथि याद आती है।

अब ब्योमकेश समझ जाते हैं कि सत्यकाम, उशानाथ बाबू का असली बेटा नहीं था। सालों पहले सुचित्रा गर्भवती थी और उसके पिता ने बदनामी छिपाने के लिए अपनी बेटी की शादी अपने ही कर्मचारी उशानाथ से कर दी थी। बदले में उन्हें सुचित्रा एम्पोरियम का आधा मालिक बना दिया गया।
उशानाथ ने जिंदगीभर यह अपमान सहा, जबकि सत्यकाम बड़ा होकर उसी अज्ञात पिता की तरह बदचलन और निर्दयी बन गया। उसकी हरकतों से परिवार की इज्जत और व्यापार दोनों बर्बाद होने लगे थे।
आखिरकार ब्योमकेश पूरी घटना जोड़ लेते हैं। उस रात अंधेरे में उशानाथ ने दरवाजे के पास चमकीला चक्का चिपकाया था। जैसे ही सत्यकाम टॉर्च की रोशनी में उसे देखने के लिए झुका, ऊपर बालकनी से चली गोली सीधे उसकी पीठ में जा लगी।
लेकिन सच जानने के बाद भी ब्योमकेश एक कठिन फैसले के सामने खड़े थे।

One evening, a wealthy but reckless young man named Satyakam Das unexpectedly visits detective Byomkesh Bakshi. Satyakam is one of the owners of the famous department store Suchitra Emporium. Known for alcoholism, womanizing, and immoral behavior, he is hated by many people in his neighborhood. Several young men openly discuss teaching him a lesson for harassing women.
Just days later, newspapers report shocking news — Satyakam Das has been shot dead outside his own house shortly after midnight.
Byomkesh immediately begins investigating the family. Inside the house live Satyakam’s stepfather Ushanath Babu, his emotionally distant mother, cousin Shitanshu, cousin Chumki, and an old servant named Sahadev. Every family member appears nervous, yet nobody seems truly shocked by Satyakam’s death.
The postmortem report reveals that the bullet entered from behind and traveled upward into the chest. Another strange clue is discovered near the doorway — a small shiny silver disc pasted onto the ground. According to Byomkesh, Satyakam must have bent down to inspect it moments before he was shot.
As the investigation deepens, Byomkesh realizes this murder is connected to a dark family secret hidden for over twenty years.
A breakthrough comes when he discovers an old wedding card mentioning the marriage date of Ushanath and Suchitra. Suddenly, Byomkesh remembers the birth date Satyakam casually mentioned during their first meeting.
The gap between the marriage date and Satyakam’s birth was only six months.
Now the horrifying truth becomes clear. Satyakam was not Ushanath’s biological son. Years earlier, Suchitra had become pregnant before marriage, and her wealthy father secretly arranged her marriage with his poor employee Ushanath to avoid public disgrace. In return, Ushanath was made co-owner of Suchitra Emporium.
But the humiliation destroyed his married life forever. Ushanath and Suchitra lived like strangers for years, while Satyakam grew into an immoral and destructive young man who endangered both the family’s reputation and business.
Finally, Byomkesh reconstructs the murder. On the night of the crime, Ushanath secretly pasted the shiny silver disc near the doorway. When Satyakam bent down with his torch to examine it, a bullet fired from the balcony struck him directly from above.
Yet even after uncovering the truth, Byomkesh faces a difficult moral dilemma.
Was Ushanath simply a murderer… or a broken man destroyed by decades of humiliation?
