जल्द ही पता चलता है कि लाश सुरेश्वर की पत्नी हेमा की थी। सुरेश्वर और उसके तीन दोस्त दावा करते हैं कि वे पूरी रात काली किंकर की दुकान में ताश खेल रहे थे। चारों एक-दूसरे को मजबूत बहाना देते हैं, जिससे पुलिस उलझ जाती है।
जांच के दौरान हेमा की जिंदगी के कई राज सामने आते हैं। सुरेश्वर मानता है कि उसे अपनी पत्नी के चरित्र पर शक था। उसके कमरे से ऐसे महंगे गहने मिले थे जो उसने कभी नहीं दिए थे। मोहल्ले में भी हेमा को लेकर तरह-तरह की बातें होती थीं।
लेकिन पोस्टमार्टम रिपोर्ट मामला और रहस्यमयी बना देती है। हेमा की हत्या न जहर से हुई थी और न ही साधारण गला घोंटकर। उसे एक बेहद खतरनाक सैन्य तकनीक से मारा गया था, जिसमें गर्दन की हड्डी एक ही वार में तोड़ दी जाती है।
नीलमणि को पता चलता है कि युद्ध के समय सुरेश्वर का संपर्क अंग्रेज फौजी अधिकारियों से था और संभव है कि उसने यह तरीका वहीं सीखा हो। उन्हें यकीन हो जाता है कि सुरेश्वर ने गुस्से में अपनी पत्नी की हत्या की है।
लेकिन इससे पहले कि पुलिस उसे गिरफ्तार कर पाती, सुरेश्वर खुद उसी रहस्यमयी तरीके से मारा जाता है। अब पूरा मामला उलझ जाता है। अगर सुरेश्वर ही कातिल था, तो फिर उसका हत्यारा कौन था?

The case began when Neelmani, during one of his late-night patrols, spotted four men secretly carrying a dead body toward the cremation ground. Before they could escape, he stopped them and identified one of them as Sureshwar Ghosh, a wealthy wartime contractor.
Soon it was discovered that the corpse belonged to Sureshwar’s wife, Hema. Her death appeared suspicious, but Sureshwar and his three close friends insisted they had spent the entire night gambling together at Kali Kinkar’s shop. All four men supported each other’s alibi perfectly.
As Neelmani investigates further, disturbing secrets about Hema’s married life begin to emerge. Sureshwar privately admits that he suspected Hema of having relationships with unknown men. Expensive jewelry found in her room had not been gifted by him, deepening suspicion about her character.
But the mystery becomes even darker after the postmortem report arrives. Hema had not been poisoned or strangled. Instead, she was killed using a rare military combat technique that instantly breaks the throat cartilage with a single strike.
Neelmani learns that Sureshwar had close connections with British army officers during World War II and could easily have learned such deadly methods. Convinced that Sureshwar murdered his wife in anger, Neelmani prepares to arrest him.
However, before any action can be taken, Sureshwar himself is found murdered in exactly the same manner as Hema. Suddenly the entire case collapses into confusion. If Sureshwar was the killer, then who killed him?
Years later, while listening carefully to Neelmani’s narration, Byomkesh notices tiny emotional details the retired officer failed to hide. Neelmani repeatedly defends Hema’s character, speaks about her with unusual affection, and somehow knows personal details nobody had mentioned during the conversation.
Slowly, Byomkesh realizes that the truth behind the murders may not be connected to jealousy alone, but to a hidden relationship buried deep in the past — a secret involving Hema’s mother, an old criminal, and Neelmani himself.
