कोलकाता के मशहूर महाजन विशुपाल पिछले तीन महीनों से लकवे का शिकार होकर बिस्तर पर पड़े थे। उनके फैमिली डॉक्टर डॉ. रक्षित एक दिन ब्योमकेश बख्शी के पास पहुँचते हैं और बताते हैं कि विशुपाल अपनी जान को लेकर बेहद डरे हुए हैं। उनका दावा था कि खतरनाक और निर्दयी अभय घोषाल उन्हें मार डालना चाहता है।

ब्योमकेश जब विशुपाल से मिलने पहुँचते हैं, तो उन्हें एक भयभीत इंसान दिखाई देता है। विशुपाल बताते हैं कि उन्होंने बिना जमानत के अभय घोषाल को तीस हजार रुपये उधार दिए थे। लेकिन बाद में उन्हें पता चला कि अभय एक खतरनाक अपराधी है, जिसने कई लोगों की जिंदगी बर्बाद की है। यहां तक कि उस पर हत्या के आरोप भी लग चुके थे।

विशुपाल बताते हैं कि जब उन्होंने अपने पैसे वापस मांगने की कोशिश की, तब अभय ने उन्हें ऐसी खौफनाक नजरों से देखा कि उनके दिल में मौत का डर बैठ गया। उसी रात उन्हें तेज बुखार आया और फिर लकवा मार गया। तब से उन्होंने खुद को घर में कैद कर लिया था। घर के बाहर गुरखा पहरा देता था और किसी को अंदर आने की इजाजत नहीं थी।

लेकिन ब्योमकेश को इस पूरे मामले में कुछ अजीब महसूस होता है। दूसरी तरफ अभय घोषाल से मुलाकात करने पर उन्हें एक चालाक, खतरनाक लेकिन बेहद शांत आदमी दिखाई देता है। अभय साफ कहता है कि लोग उसे गलत समझते हैं, लेकिन उसके दुश्मन बहुत हैं।

उसी रात अचानक खबर आती है कि अभय घोषाल की हत्या हो चुकी है। वह अपने कमरे में मृत पाया जाता है। पुलिस जांच शुरू करती है, लेकिन कोई साफ सुराग नहीं मिलता। इंस्पेक्टर सरकार बताते हैं कि अभय के इतने दुश्मन थे कि किसी पर भी शक किया जा सकता था।

मगर ब्योमकेश का ध्यान बार-बार विशुपाल की तरफ जाता है। क्या सचमुच उन्हें लकवा मार गया था? या यह सब एक सोची-समझी साजिश थी? जांच के दौरान ब्योमकेश डॉक्टरों से सलाह लेते हैं और उन्हें एक ऐसी दवा के बारे में पता चलता है, जिससे इंसान कुछ घंटों के लिए शरीर के हिस्सों को बेहोश कर सकता है।

अब कहानी एक नए मोड़ पर पहुंच जाती है। ब्योमकेश को एहसास होता है कि यह मामला केवल डर और आत्मरक्षा का नहीं, बल्कि एक बेहद खतरनाक “चक्रांत” का हिस्सा है। कोई बहुत चालाकी से खुद को बेबस दिखाकर कानून और पुलिस दोनों को धोखा दे रहा था।

Famous moneylender Bishupal had been confined to his bed for the last three months after suffering a paralytic stroke. Terrified and helpless, he sends his family doctor, Dr. Rakshit, to seek help from the legendary detective Byomkesh Bakshi. According to Bishupal, a dangerous man named Abhay Ghoshal wanted to kill him.

When Byomkesh visits Bishupal’s house, he finds a frightened man lying motionless on his bed, guarded carefully by servants and watchmen. Bishupal reveals that he had once made a terrible mistake by lending thirty thousand rupees to Abhay Ghoshal without any security. At first, Abhay appeared to be a polite and educated gentleman, but later Bishupal discovered his horrifying past.

Abhay Ghoshal was rumored to be a ruthless criminal who had ruined several lives. He had allegedly manipulated women, destroyed families, and was even accused of murder in the past. Though the court failed to prove his crimes, many believed he had escaped punishment through clever tricks and legal loopholes.

Bishupal claims that when he demanded his money back, Abhay looked at him with terrifying eyes filled with hatred. Soon after that encounter, Bishupal fell seriously ill and became paralyzed. Since then, he had locked himself inside the house, convinced that Abhay would eventually murder him.

Curious about the strange case, Byomkesh decides to meet Abhay Ghoshal personally. Surprisingly, Abhay appears calm, intelligent, and charming. He dismisses the accusations against him and insists that people fear him only because of rumors. However, Byomkesh senses something deeply unsettling beneath his polite behavior.

But before the mystery can unfold further, shocking news arrives the very same night — Abhay Ghoshal has been murdered inside his own house. The police investigation begins immediately, yet no clear suspect emerges. Since Abhay had countless enemies, almost anyone could have wanted him dead.

As Byomkesh studies the case more closely, his attention repeatedly returns to Bishupal. Was he truly paralyzed? Or was his illness part of a carefully planned conspiracy? During the investigation, Byomkesh learns about a special medical drug capable of temporarily numbing parts of the human body.

Slowly, the detective realizes that the entire case may have been built on deception, fear, and a brilliantly executed plan. Someone had manipulated everyone — including the police — while hiding behind the mask of a helpless victim.
