प्रोफेसर के पैरों पर सांप के काटने के निशान थे, लेकिन उनके सिर पर गहरी चोट भी मिली। सबसे चौंकाने वाली बात यह थी कि उनकी मुट्ठी में एक पुरानी सोने की अशर्फी कसकर पकड़ी हुई थी। उसी समय पता चलता है कि मौत से कुछ दिन पहले प्रोफेसर जो टॉर्च इस्तेमाल कर रहे थे, वह भी गायब हो चुकी है।
किले के अंदर रहने वाले लोग भी एक-दूसरे से तनाव में दिखाई देते हैं। रामकिशोर के बेटे संपत्ति के लिए लड़ते रहते हैं, जबकि दामाद मनीलाल अब छोटी बेटी तुलसी से शादी करने की तैयारी कर रहा था। दूसरी ओर, मासूम स्वभाव का शिक्षक रमापति घर में सबकी नफरत झेल रहा था, सिवाय तुलसी के।
जांच के दौरान ब्योमकेश को प्रोफेसर की पुरानी डायरी मिलती है। उसमें फारसी भाषा में लिखे कुछ रहस्यमयी शब्द और किले में छिपे खजाने का संकेत मिलता है। कहा जाता था कि मुगल दौर और सिपाही विद्रोह के समय रामकिशोर के पूर्वजों ने करोड़ों का सोना इसी किले में छिपा दिया था।
इसी बीच जंगल में रहने वाले एक रहस्यमयी साधु बाबा की हत्या हो जाती है। वह साधु परिवार के पुराने राज जानता था और मरने से पहले ब्योमकेश को कुछ बड़ा सच बताने वाला था।
अब ब्योमकेश को यकीन हो जाता है कि दोनों हत्याओं का संबंध उसी गुप्त खजाने से है।
एक रात ब्योमकेश किले के तहखाने में लगी लोहे की सलाखों की जांच करते हैं। वहां एक भारी पत्थर हटाने पर गुप्त रास्ता खुलता है, जो नीचे छिपी सुरंग तक जाता था। अंदर पुराने भट्टे, सुहागे का चूरा और सोना गलाने के निशान मिले।
तभी ब्योमकेश समझ जाते हैं कि प्रोफेसर ईशान चंद्र ने खजाने का रहस्य खोज लिया था और इस खोज में मनीलाल भी शामिल था। लेकिन लालच ने दोस्ती को हत्या में बदल दिया।
सांप के जहर से भरे फाउंटेन पेन का इस्तेमाल करके प्रोफेसर की हत्या को सांप के काटने जैसा दिखाया गया था। गायब टॉर्च, सोने की अशर्फी और सिर की चोट — अब हर सुराग एक-दूसरे से जुड़ने लगता है।

Inside the fort, tension runs through the entire family. Ramkishore’s sons constantly fight over inheritance, while his son-in-law Manilal hopes to marry Ramkishore’s younger daughter Tulsi after the death of his first wife. Meanwhile, young tutor Ramapati quietly lives inside the mansion, disliked by almost everyone except Tulsi.
As Byomkesh investigates further, he discovers an old diary written by Professor Ishan Chandra. Hidden inside are Persian inscriptions mentioning a secret treasure protected during the Mughal era. According to legend, enormous wealth belonging to Ramkishore’s ancestors was hidden somewhere inside the fort during times of war and rebellion.
Soon another shocking event takes place. A mysterious sadhu living near the jungle — who secretly knew the family’s hidden past — is murdered before he can reveal important information to Byomkesh.
Now the detective becomes certain that both murders are connected to the hidden treasure.
Late one night, Byomkesh carefully examines the iron bars inside an underground chamber of the fort. Behind a massive stone slab, he discovers a secret passage leading into a forgotten underground vault. Inside, traces of melted gold, old furnaces, and chemical residue reveal that someone had already found the treasure long ago.
Byomkesh finally realizes that Professor Ishan Chandra had uncovered the hidden chamber and secretly shared the discovery with Manilal. But greed soon turned deadly.
Using a poisoned fountain pen filled with snake venom, the killer cleverly staged the professor’s death as a snakebite murder. The missing torch, the hidden gold coin, and the professor’s head injury suddenly begin fitting together perfectly.
As the final truth emerges, Byomkesh uncovers a centuries-old secret hidden beneath the fort itself — a secret connected to a giant cannon named “Mohanlal.”
