16-year-old Shanti is the younger of two daughters of her poor parents. Her father is unemployed and has no source of income. Her mother is the sole earner in the family, but her father steals her earnings for his own desires.

One day, Shanti’s mother and sister notice that for the past few days, her father has not been drinking. They are surprised at this sudden change. One morning, he returns after meeting someone and asks Shanti to come with him, saying he has found some labor work and she can also earn with him. Shanti’s mother forbids him from taking her because she is a minor and wants her to continue her studies. She asks him to take Shanti’s elder sister instead, but he refuses and convinces Shanti that if she goes with him, she will be able to help her mother financially.

He sells Shanti to another man. When Shanti’s mother asks about her, he claims that she ran away with someone and will not return. Shanti’s mother goes to the Dhaka Police to file a complaint, but they also deny help, saying Shanti must have eloped and will come back on her own.

On the other hand, the man prepares forged documents for Shanti, brings her to India via the Indo-Bangladesh border, and sells her to another person in West Bengal.

शांति 16 साल की है और वो गरीब माँ-बाप की दो बेटियों में छोटी है. उसका बाप कोई कामधाम नहीं करता है और सिर्फ अय्याशी करता है. उसकी माँ ही घर की जीविका चलाती है. शांति का बाप उसकी माँ के कमाए हुए पैसे चुरा कर अपनी आदतें पूरी करता है.

शांति की माँ और बहन एक दिन गौर करते हैं कि उसका पिता कई दिनों से ठीक है. उन्हें इस बात से ताज्जुब होता है कि ये इंसान इतने दिन से ठीक क्यों है. एक दिन सुबह शांति का बाप किसी से मिलकर आता है और बताता है कि उसको मजदूरी का काम मिल गया है और शांति को अपने साथ ले जाना चाहता है क्योंकि काम में एक लड़की की भी ज़रूरत है. माँ के मना करने पर भी वो शांति को ही ले जाता है यह समझाकर कि शांति अब खुद कमाएगी और अपने पैरों पर खड़ी होगी. उसकी माँ बोलती है कि शांति अभी छोटी है, बड़ी बहन को ले जाओ, लेकिन वो नहीं मानता.

वो शांति को ले जाकर अपने एक जानने वाले को बेच देता है और मिले हुए रुपयों से फिर से अय्याशी करने लगता है. माँ के पूछने पर कि शांति कहाँ है, वो कहता है कि शांति किसी के साथ भाग गई है. शांति की माँ ढाका पुलिस में शिकायत दर्ज कराने जाती है मगर उसकी कोई सुनवाई नहीं होती. पुलिस भी यह कहकर मामला टाल देती है कि वो वापस आ जाएगी.

दूसरी तरफ वो आदमी शांति के नकली कागज़ बनाकर बांग्लादेश-भारत सीमा से भारत लाता है और पश्चिम बंगाल में उसे एक अन्य आदमी को बेच देता है.
