रामकृपाल चौबे एक ईमानदार सरकारी कर्मचारी थे, जो कानूनगो के पद पर कार्यरत थे। वर्षों की सेवा के बाद वह अपने रिटायरमेंट के करीब पहुंच चुके थे और परिवार के साथ शांत जीवन बिताने की तैयारी कर रहे थे। लेकिन किस्मत ने उनके लिए कुछ और ही लिख रखा था।
एक शाम रामकृपाल अपने कार्यालय के बाहर घर जाने के लिए सवारी का इंतजार कर रहे थे। तभी मोटरसाइकिल पर सवार दो युवक उनके पास आए। उन्होंने आदरपूर्वक उन्हें प्रणाम किया, जिससे रामकृपाल को कोई शक नहीं हुआ। लेकिन अगले ही पल दोनों ने उन पर गोलियां चला दीं और मौके से फरार हो गए।
गंभीर रूप से घायल रामकृपाल की घटनास्थल पर ही मृत्यु हो गई। पूरे इलाके में सनसनी फैल गई। एक ईमानदार अधिकारी की दिनदहाड़े हत्या ने प्रशासन और पुलिस दोनों को हिला कर रख दिया।
जांच शुरू होते ही पुलिस का पहला शक अभय चौहान नाम के एक प्रभावशाली बाहुबली पर गया। कुछ समय पहले उसका रामकृपाल से विवाद हुआ था और उसने कथित तौर पर रिश्वत देने की भी कोशिश की थी। लेकिन जांच में उसके खिलाफ कोई ठोस सबूत नहीं मिला।
पुलिस हर संभावित सुराग की जांच करती रही, लेकिन एक महीने से अधिक समय बीत जाने के बाद भी मामला सुलझ नहीं पाया। इस बीच रामकृपाल के बेटे सुरेश को एक धमकी भरा फोन आया। कॉल करने वाले ने उसे जान से मारने की धमकी दी और बदले में दस लाख रुपये की मांग की।
अब जांच एक नए मोड़ पर पहुंच गई। क्या यह फिरौती की कॉल हत्या से जुड़ी थी, या कोई पुलिस को गुमराह करने की कोशिश कर रहा था?
एसपी से लेकर कलेक्टर तक सभी इस बात से नाराज थे कि इतना चर्चित मामला अब तक क्यों नहीं सुलझ पाया। बढ़ते दबाव के बीच पुलिस ने सुरेश को फोन करने वाले व्यक्ति की तलाश शुरू कर दी। लेकिन उन्हें नहीं पता था कि इस केस की सच्चाई उनके सभी अनुमान बदल देने वाली थी।

The unexpected call gave investigators a fresh lead. Was the extortion attempt connected to Ramkripal’s murder, or was someone taking advantage of the family’s tragedy?
With pressure mounting from senior officials and the public demanding answers, police shifted their focus to tracing the mysterious caller. What they eventually uncovered would turn the entire case in an unexpected direction.
