यह कहानी उत्तर प्रदेश के मऊ जिले में रहने वाले एक रिटायर्ड फौजी राजदेव ठाकुर से शुरू होती है। वर्ष 1995 के आसपास राजदेव को गिरिजा नाम की एक युवती से प्रेम हो जाता है। गिरिजा एक गरीब परिवार से संबंध रखती है और उसके दिवंगत पिता कभी राजदेव के घर में नौकर हुआ करते थे। समय के साथ राजदेव का प्रेम एक खतरनाक जुनून का रूप लेने लगता है।
जुलाई 1997 में पुलिस को एक ही दिन दो अलग-अलग स्थानों से दो शव बरामद होते हैं। पहला शव हरियाणा के पलवल से और दूसरा उत्तर प्रदेश के गाजियाबाद से मिलता है। दोनों शव काफी हद तक सड़ चुके होते हैं, लेकिन उनमें एक समानता दिखाई देती है। दोनों मृतकों के हाथों पर जबरन “I Am Sorry” लिखा हुआ होता है। शवों की पहचान न हो पाने के कारण पुलिस उन्हें अज्ञात मानकर दफना देती है।
अगले दिन वसीम रहमान नाम का व्यक्ति अपने दो बेटों फिरोज रहमान और कासिम रहमान की गुमशुदगी की रिपोर्ट दर्ज करवाता है। दोनों युवक घर से यह कहकर निकले थे कि वे एक दोस्त की पार्टी में जा रहे हैं, लेकिन वापस नहीं लौटे। बाद में पुलिस को पता चलता है कि बरामद किए गए दोनों शव उन्हीं भाइयों के थे।
करीब एक साल बाद, मई 1998 में दिल्ली की एक सड़क किनारे एक और शव मिलता है। इस बार भी मृतक के हाथ पर वही शब्द “I Am Sorry” लिखे हुए मिलते हैं। जांच के दौरान पुलिस को एक और शव मिलता है, जिस पर भी वही निशान मौजूद होता है। अब पुलिस को शक होने लगता है कि यह किसी सीरियल किलर का काम हो सकता है।
अगले दिन मिश्रा परिवार के लोग पुलिस स्टेशन पहुंचते हैं और निशांत मिश्रा तथा सुभाष मिश्रा की गुमशुदगी की शिकायत दर्ज कराते हैं। जांच में पता चलता है कि दोनों युवकों को आखिरी बार राजदेव ठाकुर के साथ देखा गया था। इससे पुलिस का शक राजदेव पर गहरा जाता है।
तफ्तीश आगे बढ़ने पर पुलिस को यह भी जानकारी मिलती है कि गिरिजा ने पहले दो बार राजदेव ठाकुर के खिलाफ शिकायत दर्ज करवाई थी। इससे दोनों के रिश्ते में तनाव और विवाद होने के संकेत मिलते हैं। सबसे चौंकाने वाली बात यह होती है कि गिरिजा भी अब लापता है।
एक तरफ रहस्यमयी हत्याएं, दूसरी तरफ युवकों की गुमशुदगी और तीसरी ओर गिरिजा का गायब होना—इन सभी घटनाओं के केंद्र में राजदेव ठाकुर दिखाई देता है। पुलिस को विश्वास होने लगता है कि राजदेव की दीवानगी और उसका अतीत ही इन रहस्यमयी हत्याओं का सबसे बड़ा सुराग है।
Mau, Uttar Pradesh
The story begins in the mid-1990s with Rajdev Thakur, a retired army man living in Mau, Uttar Pradesh. Rajdev falls deeply in love with Girija, a young woman from a poor family. Girija’s late father had once worked as a servant in Rajdev’s household. Despite the difference in their social status, Rajdev becomes emotionally attached to her and gradually develops an unhealthy obsession.
In July 1997, police in two different states make a disturbing discovery. One decomposed body is found in Palwal, Haryana, while another is recovered from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Although the victims appear unrelated, investigators notice a chilling similarity. The words “I Am Sorry” are carved into the hands of both dead men. Since no identification is found, the bodies are buried as unclaimed remains.
The following day, a man named Waseem Rehman approaches the police to report his sons, Firoz Rehman and Kasim Rehman, missing. The brothers had left home saying they were attending a party at a friend’s house but never returned. Eventually, police realize that the unidentified bodies recovered earlier belonged to the missing brothers.
Nearly a year later, in May 1998, another body is discovered on a roadside in Delhi. Once again, investigators find the same disturbing message carved onto the victim’s hand. During the investigation, police recover yet another body bearing identical markings. The pattern suggests the work of a serial killer.
The next day, members of the Mishra family arrive at the police station to report that Nishant Mishra and Subhash Mishra have disappeared. Investigation reveals that both young men were last seen with Rajdev Thakur. This revelation places Rajdev at the center of the inquiry.
As detectives dig deeper, they uncover old complaints filed by Girija against Rajdev. The complaints indicate that their relationship was troubled and that Girija may have feared him. Even more alarming is the fact that Girija herself is now missing.
While police struggle to connect the murders, disappearances, and Rajdev’s obsession, one fact becomes clear: Rajdev appears unusually distressed by Girija’s disappearance. Investigators begin to suspect that his fixation on her may hold the key to solving the mysterious killings and uncovering the truth behind the haunting message, “I Am Sorry.”
