Lights Out
A busy market area in Varanasi is shaken by four gunshots at around 8:30 PM. The shooting takes place during a storm-induced power outage. When nearby shopkeepers rush to the scene, they find 50-year-old businessman Suresh Verma lying in a pool of blood. He has been shot at point-blank range and dies instantly.
During the investigation, police learn that Suresh had a long-standing property dispute with his younger brother. Because of this rivalry, his brother becomes the first person called in for questioning.
Investigators also focus on one of Suresh’s employees, who was missing from the shop at the time of the murder. The employee explains that he left early because the electricity had gone out and he assumed there would be no customers due to the storm.
As the inquiry progresses, police discover that an unidentified man had been surveying the area for several days before the shooting and disappeared immediately afterward.
Police also learn that Suresh’s relationship with his brother-in-law, who assisted him in the business, was strained. According to witnesses, Suresh often treated him more like a servant than a family member.

यह घटना 28 अगस्त की है। बनारस के चौक थाने के पीछे राजादरवाजा इलाके में रात लगभग 8:30 बजे झोले के थोक व्यापारी 50 वर्षीय मोहन निगम की उनकी दुकान में घुसकर गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी गई थी। पुलिस को घटनास्थल से .32 बोर के दो खोखे बरामद हुए थे।
वारदात के समय तेज बारिश के कारण इलाके की बिजली चली गई थी और अधिकांश दुकानदार अपनी दुकानें बंद करने की तैयारी कर रहे थे। बिजली ठीक करने के लिए इलेक्ट्रीशियन भी पहुँच चुके थे कि तभी अचानक गोलियों की आवाज़ से पूरा इलाका गूँज उठा।
प्रत्यक्षदर्शियों के अनुसार, घटना के तुरंत बाद दो लोगों को पास की गली से भागते हुए देखा गया था।
उस रात मोहन निगम अपनी दुकान पर अकेले मौजूद थे। उनका कर्मचारी अरविंद दवा लेने बाहर गया हुआ था। इसी दौरान अंधेरे और बिजली कटौती का फायदा उठाकर दो हमलावर दुकान में घुसे और ताबड़तोड़ गोलियां चलाकर फरार हो गए।
मोहन की हत्या के बाद परिवार पर दुखों का पहाड़ टूट पड़ा। अस्पताल पहुँचते ही उनकी पत्नी बेहोश हो गई, जबकि बच्चे सदमे में रोते-बिलखते रहे।
पुलिस का पहला शक मोहन के छोटे भाई रामचंद्र पर गया। मोहन के बेटे गौरव ने बताया कि दोनों भाइयों के बीच पैतृक संपत्ति को लेकर लंबे समय से विवाद चल रहा था और इसी वजह से अक्सर झगड़े होते थे।
गौरव के बयान के आधार पर पुलिस ने रामचंद्र, चचेरे भाई शिव और विजय लक्ष्मी के खिलाफ मामला दर्ज कर जांच शुरू की।
