A Case of Mistaken Identity

Kalu (real name Pappu) was a notorious criminal accused of murdering his brother-in-law with the help of his own sister and a friend. Soon after the crime, the police arrested his sister and the friend, but Kalu managed to escape. Despite months of investigation, the police failed to locate him.
The case eventually reached court, where the two arrested accused were sentenced to life imprisonment. At the same time, the court criticized the police for failing to arrest the main accused and instructed them to find Kalu as soon as possible.
Under increasing pressure, the police allegedly took a shocking shortcut. Instead of finding Kalu, they arrested his younger brother Munnu, a daily wage laborer working in Jaipur, and presented him as Kalu before the court. Munnu repeatedly insisted that he was not Kalu, but nobody listened. His mother also tried desperately to convince the authorities that they had arrested the wrong person.
The situation became even worse because Munnu had no identity documents to prove who he really was. His mother approached several lawyers over the years, hoping someone would help expose the truth, but every attempt failed.
Days turned into months, months turned into years, and before anyone realized it, nearly a decade had passed. Munnu remained behind bars, still waiting for someone to believe that he was not the man the police claimed him to be.

मुन्नू, जो एक कुख्यात अपराधी माना जाता था, पर अपने बहनोई की हत्या का आरोप था। इस हत्या में उसकी बहन और एक दोस्त के शामिल होने की भी बात सामने आई। पुलिस ने हत्या के बाद दोनों आरोपियों को गिरफ्तार कर लिया, लेकिन मुख्य आरोपी मुन्नू उनके हाथ नहीं लगा।
मामला अदालत तक पहुंचा और गिरफ्तार दोनों आरोपियों को उम्रकैद की सजा सुनाई गई। साथ ही अदालत ने पुलिस को फटकार लगाई कि वह इतने समय बाद भी मुख्य आरोपी को गिरफ्तार क्यों नहीं कर पाई।
लगातार बढ़ते दबाव के बीच पुलिस ने कथित रूप से एक ऐसा कदम उठाया जिसने पूरे मामले को विवादों में ला दिया। असली आरोपी को खोजने के बजाय पुलिस ने उसके छोटे भाई कालू को गिरफ्तार कर लिया और उसे ही मुन्नू बताकर अदालत में पेश कर दिया।
कालू और उसकी मां लगातार कहते रहे कि वह मुन्नू नहीं है, लेकिन उनकी बात सुनने वाला कोई नहीं था। समस्या यह भी थी कि कालू के पास अपनी पहचान साबित करने के लिए कोई वैध दस्तावेज नहीं था।
उसकी मां ने एक के बाद एक कई वकीलों की मदद ली, लेकिन हर कोशिश नाकाम रही। समय बीतता गया और देखते ही देखते कई साल गुजर गए।

करीब दस वर्षों तक कालू न्यायिक हिरासत में रहा। वह लगातार यही कहता रहा कि वह वह व्यक्ति नहीं है जिसे पुलिस तलाश रही थी, लेकिन उसकी आवाज़ व्यवस्था की दीवारों में कहीं खोकर रह गई।
