हरिहर की गर्दन किसी तेज हथियार से बुरी तरह काट दी गई थी। लेकिन सबसे हैरानी की बात यह थी कि कमरे से कोई कीमती सामान गायब नहीं था। जांच के दौरान महाराज बताते हैं कि हरिहर का अतीत अपराधों से भरा हुआ था। वह कई बार चोरी, डकैती और जालसाजी के आरोप में जेल जा चुका था। लेकिन जेल से रिहा होने के बाद उसने अपनी जिंदगी बदल दी थी और बेहद ईमानदारी से महाराज की सेवा कर रहा था।
इसी बीच ब्योमकेश को एक पुराने नाम का पता चलता है — रमानाथ नियोगी। यह वही मशहूर चोर था जिसने वर्षों पहले कोलकाता के बड़े-बड़े घरों और ज्वेलरी दुकानों में करोड़ों की चोरी करके सनसनी मचा दी थी। हाल ही में वह आठ साल की सजा काटकर अलीपुर जेल से बाहर आया था।
आठ साल पहले महाराज रमेंद्र सिंह के महल से भी बहुमूल्य हीरे-जवाहरात चोरी हुए थे। पुलिस लगभग सब कुछ बरामद कर चुकी थी, लेकिन एक बेहद रहस्यमयी रत्न आज तक नहीं मिला — “लाल नीलम”।
कहा जाता था कि इस लाल नीलम में अजीब शक्ति थी। कुछ लोगों के लिए वह किस्मत बदल देता था, जबकि दूसरों के लिए विनाश का कारण बन जाता था। महाराज आज भी उसे वापस पाने के लिए बड़ा इनाम देने को तैयार थे।
जांच के दौरान ब्योमकेश को पता चलता है कि जेल में रमानाथ और हरिहर एक ही बैरक में बंद थे। जेल की तलाशी से बचाने के लिए रमानाथ ने वही लाल नीलम हरिहर के पास छिपा दिया था। हरिहर के पास अपने गले के अंदर छोटी चीजें छिपाने की अनोखी कला थी।
लेकिन किस्मत ने दोनों को अलग कर दिया। हरिहर दूसरी जेल भेज दिया गया और रमानाथ वर्षों तक उस लाल नीलम को खोजता रहा। अब ब्योमकेश समझ जाते हैं कि यह हत्या सिर्फ चोरी या पैसों के लिए नहीं हुई थी। इसके पीछे लालच, बदला और उस रहस्यमयी लाल नीलम का खतरनाक मोह छिपा था।
आखिरकार ब्योमकेश अपने घर में एक नाटकीय सभा आयोजित करते हैं, जहां रमानाथ नियोगी को बुलाया जाता है। धीरे-धीरे बातचीत ऐसा मोड़ लेती है कि हर किसी की नजर उसी रहस्यमयी लाल नीलम पर टिक जाती है।

Shortly after marrying Satyawati, detective Byomkesh Bakshi begins adjusting to domestic life when a shocking murder case arrives at his doorstep. Harihar’s throat had been slashed in a horrifying manner, but strangely, nothing valuable appeared to be stolen. The Maharaj reveals that Harihar had once been a notorious criminal who spent years in prison for theft, forgery, and robbery. Yet after his release, he had transformed into a loyal and hardworking employee.
While investigating, Byomkesh discovers an old connection between Harihar and a legendary jewel thief named Ramanath Niyogi, who had recently been released from Alipore Jail after serving eight years in prison.
Years earlier, Ramanath had carried out daring robberies across Calcutta while disguising himself as wealthy aristocrats and businessmen. During one famous theft, jewels worth lakhs were stolen from Maharaj Ramendra Singh’s mansion. Although most of the stolen gems were later recovered, one priceless stone remained missing — a mysterious and extremely rare Red Sapphire, known as the “Laal Neelam.”
The Maharaj explains that the gem was believed to possess strange astrological powers. Some considered it lucky, while others believed it destroyed the lives of anyone unworthy enough to possess it.
Byomkesh slowly uncovers the horrifying truth hidden inside the prison years. Ramanath and Harihar had once shared the same jail cell. To hide the stolen gem from prison guards, Ramanath secretly entrusted it to Harihar, who used an unusual method to conceal valuables inside his own throat.
But before Ramanath could recover the gem, Harihar was transferred to another prison and later disappeared after his release. Ever since then, Ramanath had been desperately searching for him.
Now Byomkesh realizes that Harihar’s murder was not driven by money alone — it was connected to obsession, revenge, and the terrifying influence of the cursed Red Sapphire itself.
To expose the killer, Byomkesh arranges a dramatic gathering inside his home and begins psychologically manipulating Ramanath Niyogi. But during the confrontation, one final question still remains unanswered.
Where was the missing Red Sapphire hidden?
Did the cursed gem truly destroy everyone who possessed it?
