एक रात होटल बिकने की डील पूरी होने के बाद मानिक अचानक होटल पहुंचता है। उसी रात विजय विश्वास रहस्यमयी तरीके से गायब हो जाता है। उसकी पत्नी हेमवती दावा करती है कि मानिक ने विजय को गहरी खाई में धक्का दे दिया और होटल की तिजोरी से डेढ़ लाख रुपये लेकर फरार हो गया।
दो दिन बाद पुलिस को खाई में कुछ हड्डियां, खून से सने कपड़े और विजय का मफलर मिलता है। माना जाता है कि जंगली शेर ने उसकी लाश खा ली। पुलिस मानिक मेहता को हत्यारा घोषित कर देती है, लेकिन वह हमेशा के लिए गायब हो जाता है।
सालों बाद जब ब्योमकेश उसी होटल में ठहरते हैं, तो कई छोटी-छोटी बातें उन्हें परेशान करने लगती हैं। विजय ने मरने वाली रात अपना बैंक अकाउंट क्यों बंद किया था? मानिक मेहता अपने खाते में हजारों रुपये छोड़कर क्यों गायब हो गया? और होटल के कमरे में रखी घड़ी रोज रात ठीक दो बजे ही क्यों बज उठती थी?
जांच के दौरान ब्योमकेश को कोलकाता के एक पते का सुराग मिलता है, जहां हेमवती छिपकर रह रही थी। अजीत वहां पहुंचता है और देखता है कि घर में एक दाढ़ी वाला नौकर भी रहता है, जो हर वक्त चुपचाप नजरें बचाता रहता था।
धीरे-धीरे ब्योमकेश को एहसास होता है कि पूरी कहानी में सबसे बड़ा धोखा उसी घटना में छिपा था, जिसे सब लोग सच मान बैठे थे। शायद विजय विश्वास कभी मरा ही नहीं था।

Years earlier, the hotel had been jointly managed by two partners — a Bengali hotel manager named Vijay Biswas and a mysterious Gujarati businessman called Manek Mehta. While Vijay handled the hotel operations honestly, Manek was rumored to be involved in smuggling, black marketing, and illegal gold trading.
One night, shortly after the hotel was sold to a new owner, Manek suddenly arrived at the hotel under suspicious circumstances. Later that same night, Vijay Biswas mysteriously disappeared. His wife Hemvati claimed that Manek had pushed Vijay into a deep valley and escaped with nearly one and a half lakh rupees from the hotel safe.
Two days later, police recovered only a few bloodstained clothes, broken bones, and Vijay’s muffler from the valley below. Since wild animals frequently roamed the area, authorities concluded that a lion had devoured the body. Manek Mehta was officially declared the murderer, but he vanished without a trace.
Years later, while staying in the same room once occupied by Vijay and Hemvati, Byomkesh begins noticing strange details that do not fit the official story. Why had Vijay closed his bank account on the very day of his death? Why did Manek leave thousands of rupees untouched in his own account if he planned to escape forever? And why did the room’s old alarm clock mysteriously ring every night exactly at 2 AM?
As the investigation deepens, Byomkesh discovers an address in Calcutta linked to Hemvati. Ajit secretly visits the house and notices a silent bearded servant behaving suspiciously. Small clues inside the house slowly convince Byomkesh that the entire murder story may have been carefully staged from the beginning.
Now the detective realizes that this is not just a murder mystery, but a brilliantly planned conspiracy involving greed, fake identities, and betrayal. Most shocking of all, Vijay Biswas may never have died at all.
By the time Byomkesh informs the police and rushes back to Calcutta, the suspects have already disappeared once again, leaving behind only questions and deception.
