17 साल का होनहार छात्र गोपाल अपने माता पिता का अकेला बेटा है। मज़दूर तबके से आने वाले इस परिवार में सबसे बड़ी गोपाल कि दादी हैं जो कि बहुत बीमार हैं। दादी की तबियत अचानक बिगड़ने से उनको अस्पताल ले जाया जाता है और डॉक्टर बताते हैं जी इलाज में एक हज़ार रुपए का खर्चा आएगा। इस ग़रीब परिवार के पास 1000 रुपये नहीं हैं मगर गोपाल कहीं से रूपये का इंतज़ाम कर लेता है मगर इसके बाद ही कुछ ऐसा घटित होता है कि गोपाल एक बंद कमरे में पंखे से लटक कर अपनी जान दे देता है।
