What Happened in 2012 Also Happened in 1997

The episode commences with a high-profile meeting in Mumbai on December 16 regarding the Delhi case. The focus of the meeting is to determine what steps can be taken to prevent similar crimes from occurring. The implementation of the death penalty is not seen as a viable solution. Dhananjoy Chatterjee was hanged on August 14, 2004, for the murder of Hetal Parekh, a 14-year-old victim, on March 5, 1990. However, such crimes did not cease after his execution. If we want to put an end to such crimes, we need to address the root of the problem. The government should enact laws that make every potential criminal think twice before committing such heinous crimes. Additionally, speedy trials must be conducted in such cases. The December 16 Delhi crime was not the first of its kind in Indian history. Several similar crimes had occurred before, but flaws in the justice system prevented them from being stopped.

The focus of the episode centers around a case that occurred approximately 15 to 16 years earlier. The victim, Rachna Gupta, was 17 years old (played by Raquel Raquel Rabello) and the daughter of Rameshwar Gupta (played by Chandresh Singh), an officer at the Bokaro Steel Plant. She was the elder of his two daughters and was preparing for engineering studies. Every day, a group of seven to eight boys harassed her while she walked between her school and home. One day, the boys sent a misleading letter to her house, which her father received. When questioned about it, Rachna explained that the boys who constantly harassed her and made lewd comments were responsible. Her father, Rameshwar, confronted the boys and went to the local police station to file a complaint. The police officer assured him that they would warn the boys to stop their behavior.

The police constables went to the area and warned the boys to stop their activities, threatening to arrest them if they did not comply. However, the desire for revenge was ignited among the boys, and they plotted to teach Rachna a lesson.

The story is centered around the abduction of Monica/Maneesha (16), a Class 12 student at St. Xavier’s School in Bokaro, Jharkhand, on April 5, 1999. On that day, she was sexually assaulted by multiple individuals. The accused arrested by the police included Yunus Ansari, Abbas Ansari, Talib Ansari, Noor Alam Ansari, Mansoor Ansari, Sirajuddin Ansari, Habib Ansari, Anwar, Islam Ansari, Feroz Shah, Abdul Sattar, Gaffar Ansari, Momin Akhtar, Saiyuum Ansari, Khadim Hussain, Muzib Ansari, Shabbir Shah, Iqbal Shah, Quazi Rizwan, Pramod Pillai, and Mani Swamy.

As a result of the incident, Monica suffered severe mental trauma and was unable to walk, work, or move independently. One of the most disturbing aspects of the case was that the SP of Bokaro initially denied that the crime had occurred, claiming it was fabricated. When the incident was reported the next day along with photographs of the victim, the entire city was outraged. Thousands of residents demanded justice, and protests erupted throughout the city. Authorities imposed a curfew for three days to control the unrest.

In May 2004, Khadim Hussain, who had been absconding since the incident, was finally tracked down by the police.
