कोलकाता में प्रोफेसर देवकुमार द्वारा बनाई गई रहस्यमयी जहरीली माचिस की तीलियों का मामला खत्म हो चुका था। अदालत में पेश की गई खतरनाक माचिस पुलिस की निगरानी में रखी गई थी। लेकिन अचानक खबर आती है कि वही माचिस पुलिस कस्टडी से चोरी हो गई है। इंस्पेक्टर बिरेन यह बुरी खबर लेकर सीधे ब्योमकेश बख्शी के घर पहुंचते हैं।
उसी समय ब्योमकेश को एक और अजीब घटना का एहसास होता है। ट्राम से लौटते वक्त एक अजनबी ब्योमकेश बोस ने उनसे माचिस मांगी थी और वापस करते समय डिब्बी बदल दी थी। जांच करने पर पता चलता है कि वह वही जहरीली माचिस थी, जिसकी एक तीली किसी भी इंसान की जान ले सकती थी।
अब यह साफ था कि कोई बेहद चालाक दुश्मन ब्योमकेश को मारना चाहता था।
इसी बीच एक रहस्यमयी चिट्ठी भी आती है, जो “कोकानंद गुप्त” नाम के व्यक्ति ने लिखी थी। चिट्ठी में लिखा था कि वह वर्षों पुराना “कर्ज” चुकाने के लिए कोलकाता लौट आया है। शुरुआत में यह साधारण बात लगती है, लेकिन धीरे-धीरे ब्योमकेश को एहसास होता है कि यह पत्र किसी पुराने दुश्मन का संकेत है।
ब्योमकेश एक खतरनाक योजना बनाते हैं। अखबारों में खबर छपवाई जाती है कि “ब्योमकेश बख्शी” की रहस्यमयी मौत हो गई है और उनकी लाश श्रीरामपुर अस्पताल में रखी गई है। असल में ब्योमकेश जिंदा होते हैं और मुर्दे का नाटक करके यह देखने की कोशिश करते हैं कि कौन उन्हें देखने आता है।
पूरा दिन गुजर जाता है, लेकिन सिर्फ कुछ मामूली लोग ही अस्पताल पहुंचते हैं। तभी अचानक एक आदमी लाश देखकर घबरा जाता है और तुरंत भाग निकलता है। ब्योमकेश समझ जाते हैं कि यही असली शिकारी है और तब पता चलता है कि ये ब्योमकेश के ही पुराने केसों से जुड़ा हुआ एक मुजरिम है जिसको ब्योमकेश ने ही जेल भिजवाया था।

At almost the same time, Byomkesh notices something strange. While returning home by tram, a muffler-covered stranger named Byomkesh Bose had borrowed his matchbox to light a cigarette and quietly exchanged it with another box before returning it.
Upon closer inspection, Byomkesh realizes the terrifying truth — the exchanged box contains the same poisonous matchsticks capable of killing anyone who lights them.
Now it becomes clear that someone is carefully planning to murder him.
Soon another mystery appears in the form of a strange letter written by a man named Kokanand Gupta. The writer claims he has returned to Calcutta to repay an old “debt” owed to Byomkesh. Though the letter sounds polite, Byomkesh senses hidden hatred behind every line.
To trap the unknown enemy, Byomkesh creates a risky plan. Newspapers publish fake reports claiming that “Byomkesh Bakshi” has died mysteriously and that his body is lying in Serampore Hospital for identification. In reality, Byomkesh disguises himself as the corpse and secretly waits to see who arrives to confirm his death.
The entire day passes, but only a few ordinary people arrive at the hospital. Then, suddenly, a man panics when he sees the dead body and immediately runs away. Byomkesh realizes that this is the real culprit. It is then revealed that the man is a criminal connected to one of Byomkesh’s old cases—the very criminal whom Byomkesh had once sent to prison.
