ब्योमकेश बख्शी और अजीत अपने मित्र तथा मशहूर जमींदार हिमांशु राय के निमंत्रण पर गांव घूमने जाते हैं। हिमांशु शिकार के बेहद शौकीन थे और अपनी अद्भुत “शब्दभेदी” निशानेबाजी के लिए दूर-दूर तक मशहूर थे। आंखों पर पट्टी बांधकर सिर्फ आवाज सुनकर निशाना लगाना उनकी खास कला थी।
लेकिन शांत दिखाई देने वाली यह यात्रा अचानक रहस्य में बदल जाती है जब जमींदारी के दीवान कालीगति भट्टाचार्य खबर देते हैं कि बेबी को पढ़ाने वाला नया मास्टर हरिनाथ अचानक गायब हो गया है। उसके साथ जमींदारी के चार साल पुराने हिसाब-किताब के खाते और छह हजार रुपये भी लापता हैं।
हरिनाथ एक गरीब लेकिन पढ़ा-लिखा युवक था। सभी लोग उसे सीधा-सादा और धार्मिक स्वभाव का मानते थे। लेकिन ब्योमकेश को कुछ बातें अजीब लगती हैं — हरिनाथ का चश्मा कमरे में पड़ा था, कपड़े वहीं टंगे थे और नई चप्पलें भी untouched पड़ी थीं। ऐसा लग ही नहीं रहा था कि कोई आदमी खुद अपनी मर्जी से कहीं गया हो।
ब्योमकेश धीरे-धीरे समझ जाते हैं कि हरिनाथ शायद जिंदा नहीं है।
जांच आगे बढ़ने पर जमींदारी के अंदर छिपे तनाव सामने आने लगते हैं। हिमांशु को शिकार और घूमने-फिरने से फुर्सत नहीं थी, जबकि पूरी जमींदारी का हिसाब दीवान कालीगति संभालते थे। इसी बीच जंगल में रहने वाले एक रहस्यमयी तांत्रिक की पुरानी कहानी भी सामने आती है।
एक दिन जंगल में घूमते समय ब्योमकेश और अजीत को एक सुनसान कुटिया मिलती है। लेकिन कुटिया के पीछे जो चीज छिपी थी, वह और भी खतरनाक थी — रेत जैसा दिखने वाला जानलेवा दलदल, जिसमें कोई भी इंसान कुछ ही मिनटों में समा सकता था।
इसके बाद दीवान दावा करते हैं कि हरिनाथ अभी भी जिंदा है और रात में उसी कुटिया में छिपकर रहता है।
अब ब्योमकेश जंगल की उसी कुटिया में अंतिम जाल बिछाते हैं। लेकिन आधी रात को शेर की दहाड़, अंधेरे जंगल और अचानक चली गोली के बीच मामला ऐसा मोड़ लेता है, जिसकी किसी ने कल्पना भी नहीं की थी।
क्या हरिनाथ सचमुच दलदल में दफन कर दिया गया था?
और उस रात जंगल में असली शिकार कौन बना?
Detective Byomkesh Bakshi and Ajit travel to the countryside as guests of young zamindar Himanshu Roy, a famous hunter known for his extraordinary shooting skills. Himanshu proudly demonstrates his “sound-target shooting” ability — the rare talent of firing accurately at sounds while blindfolded.
But the peaceful hunting trip suddenly turns troubling when the estate manager, Dewan Kaligati Bhattacharya, reports that a newly hired tutor named Harinath has mysteriously disappeared. Along with him, four years of estate account books and six thousand rupees have vanished.
Harinath was a poor but educated young man hired to teach Himanshu’s little daughter. According to the servants, he was simple, religious, and extremely innocent. Yet strange clues immediately disturb Byomkesh — Harinath’s spectacles were left behind, his clothes remained untouched, and even the new slippers gifted to him were still inside the room.
Byomkesh quietly concludes that Harinath never left the estate alive.
As the investigation deepens, hidden tensions inside the zamindar household begin surfacing. The clever Dewan controlled most of the estate accounts, while Himanshu himself cared little about financial matters and spent most of his time hunting. Meanwhile, rumors spread about a mysterious tantric who once lived deep inside the nearby jungle.
One day, while wandering through the forest, Byomkesh and Ajit come across an abandoned hut. But what was hidden behind the hut was even more dangerous—a deadly quicksand that looked like ordinary sand, capable of swallowing any person within minutes.
After this, Diwan claims that Harinath is still alive and secretly stays in that very hut at night.
Now, Byomkesh sets his final trap at the same forest hut. But at midnight, amid the roar of a tiger, the darkness of the jungle, and a sudden gunshot, the case takes a shocking turn that no one could have imagined.
Was Harinath really buried in the quicksand?
And who became the real prey in the forest that night?
