Maharashtra Thallium Murder Case: The Alleged Conspiracy Behind 5 Deaths

Maharashtra’s Jolly Joseph? The Shocking Thallium Poisoning Case of Mahagaon

Five Family Members Died Within 20 Days as Police Uncovered an Alleged Poisoning Conspiracy

In a small village in Maharashtra, a family began experiencing one tragedy after another. First, an elderly couple fell seriously ill. Within days, more members of the same family developed similar symptoms. Despite being rushed to hospitals, five people eventually lost their lives.

At first, the deaths appeared mysterious. But as investigators examined the unusual pattern, they began suspecting that the incidents were connected. The investigation eventually led police to a shocking theory involving a highly toxic substance called thallium and an alleged conspiracy involving two women from the same extended family.

The case emerged from Mahagaon village in Aheri taluka of Gadchiroli district, Maharashtra, in September and October 2023. The sequence of deaths and the alleged planning behind them drew comparisons with other notorious poisoning cases in India, including the Jolly Joseph case of Kerala.

The Five Victims of the Mahagaon Case

The five people who died were members of the Kumbhare family and their extended family:

  • Shankar Kumbhare
  • Vijaya Kumbhare
  • Roshan Kumbhare
  • Komal Dahagaonkar
  • Ananda alias Varsha Urade

Shankar and Vijaya were the parents of Roshan and Komal. Ananda, popularly known as Varsha Urade, was Vijaya’s sister.

A Series of Mysterious Deaths

The first alarming incident occurred on September 20, 2023, when Shankar and his wife Vijaya suddenly began experiencing unusual health problems. They complained of tingling sensations in their limbs, severe lower back pain and headaches. Their lips reportedly became dark, and their tongues felt unusually heavy.

The couple was initially taken to a hospital in Aheri. As their condition worsened, they were shifted for further treatment to hospitals in Chandrapur and Nagpur. Shankar died on September 26, 2023, and Vijaya passed away the following day.

The family was still struggling to cope with the deaths when more members began falling ill with similar symptoms.

Komal Dahagaonkar died on October 8, 2023. Ananda alias Varsha Urade died on October 14, while Roshan Kumbhare passed away on October 15.

Five members of the extended family had now died within a span of approximately 20 days. The similarity in their symptoms raised serious suspicions, and investigators began examining the possibility of poisoning.

What Was Thallium? The Poison Behind the Alleged Conspiracy

As the investigation progressed, police suspected the use of thallium, a highly toxic heavy metal. Thallium compounds can cause serious poisoning, and exposure may lead to symptoms affecting the nervous system and other parts of the body.

In this case, investigators believed that the substance had been administered repeatedly over a period of time. The victims’ similar symptoms and the sequence of their illnesses became important clues in the investigation.

Police later alleged that the poison had been mixed into food and water. The case also drew attention because the substance was not immediately identified during the victims’ initial medical treatment.

Who Were the Two Women Suspected by Police?

As investigators looked into the family members’ movements and circumstances, suspicion focused on Sanghamitra Kumbhare, Roshan’s wife, and Roza Ramteke, a relative of the family.

Sanghamitra had married Roshan Kumbhare in December 2022. According to police accounts reported in the media, the marriage and her relationship with her in-laws had become troubled. Investigators also referred to allegations of harassment and domestic disputes.

Roza Ramteke reportedly had a separate dispute involving ancestral property. Police suspected that these personal and family conflicts brought the two women together.

The Alleged Plan and the Search for Poison

According to the police investigation, the two women allegedly researched different poisonous substances before settling on thallium. Investigators said that Sanghamitra had searched online for information about poisons and their effects.

Police later alleged that Sanghamitra contacted a pharmaceutical company in Mumbai while posing as a researcher. She reportedly sought to obtain thallium by presenting a research-related requirement.

Investigators also alleged that Avinash Tajne, a former school friend of Sanghamitra, helped with the procurement process. According to reports, he made an online payment of approximately Rs 12,000 to the company. Police alleged that he was aware of the intended use of the substance.

These details emerged from the police investigation and media reports. The allegations should be distinguished from findings established through a final judicial decision.

How Were the Victims Allegedly Poisoned?

During the investigation, police alleged that thallium was mixed into food and water consumed by the victims. According to the account reported by The Indian Express, Sanghamitra allegedly administered the substance to Shankar, Vijaya and Komal through food, and to Roshan through dal.

Roza Ramteke was alleged to have administered the poison to Varsha Urade. Investigators said that the two women had allegedly divided responsibilities while carrying out the plan.

Police also reported that other people, including family members and a driver, developed similar symptoms after suspected exposure. They survived after receiving medical treatment.

The Investigation Begins to Uncover the Mystery

The deaths initially appeared to be separate medical tragedies. However, the repeated symptoms and the fact that several members of the same family had died within a short period prompted investigators to examine the possibility of a common cause.

One detail reportedly attracted the investigators’ attention: Sanghamitra was the only person in the household who had not developed the same symptoms. Police also examined her conduct during Roshan’s hospitalisation and the circumstances surrounding the earlier deaths.

During questioning, police said that Sanghamitra disclosed information about the alleged poisoning and the involvement of Roza. Roza was also questioned in connection with Varsha’s death.

The investigation subsequently led police to Avinash Tajne, who was arrested on allegations that he had helped arrange the poison and make the payment for it.

The Search for the Thallium Container

Investigators continued searching for physical evidence connected to the suspected poisoning. According to a report published by The Times of India on October 30, 2023, Gadchiroli police recovered a container believed to have held thallium from a farm near the victims’ residence after an extensive search lasting around 72 hours.

The recovery was considered an important development in the investigation because it potentially connected the suspected substance with the location where the alleged crime had taken place.

A Case That Shocked Maharashtra

The Mahagaon poisoning case shocked people because the victims belonged to the same extended family and died one after another within a remarkably short period. What initially appeared to be a series of unexplained illnesses developed into a major criminal investigation.

Police alleged that personal disputes, marital conflict and an ancestral property disagreement played a role in the conspiracy. The investigation also brought attention to the alleged procurement of a highly toxic substance and the involvement of more than two people.

The case is often compared with the Jolly Joseph murders in Kerala because both investigations involved allegations of poisoning within a family. However, the circumstances and timelines of the two cases were different.

The Jolly Joseph Connection

Jolly Joseph’s case involved the deaths of six members of a family over several years in Kozhikode, Kerala. In contrast, the Mahagaon case involved five deaths within approximately 20 days.

The comparison is striking because both cases involved allegations that poisoning was used against family members. The Mahagaon investigation, however, centred on the alleged use of thallium.

Important Note

This article is based on police statements and media reports published during the investigation in 2023 and subsequent reporting. Allegations concerning the accused, their motives and their respective roles are presented as allegations and should not be treated as a substitute for a court’s findings.

The Mahagaon case remains a disturbing example of how a series of apparently unrelated deaths can lead investigators towards a suspected criminal conspiracy.
