आदिम शत्रु
कोलकाता में रहने वाली रिटायर्ड नर्स मधुबाला राय एक दिन घबराई हुई हालत में ब्योमकेश बख्शी के पास पहुंचती हैं। वह बताती हैं कि उनके दत्तक बेटे प्रभात की जान खतरे में है। वर्षों पहले पटना अस्पताल में एक लावारिस बच्चे को उन्होंने पाल-पोसकर बड़ा किया था, जिसे बाद में अमीर व्यापारी अनादी हलदार ने गोद लेने का फैसला किया।
अनादी हलदार ने प्रभात को किताबों की दुकान खरीदकर दी थी और उसे अपना वारिस बनाने की तैयारी कर रहे थे। लेकिन अनादी के दो लालची भतीजे — निमाई और निताई — इस फैसले से खुश नहीं थे। उन्हें डर था कि प्रभात के आने से उनकी पुश्तैनी संपत्ति हाथ से निकल जाएगी।
जब ब्योमकेश उन दोनों भाइयों से मिलने जाते हैं, तो उन्हें एहसास होता है कि दोनों बेहद खतरनाक और चालाक लोग हैं। उनके घर में बंदूकें मौजूद थीं और हर अजनबी पर शक किया जाता था।
कुछ ही दिनों बाद दिवाली की रात एक सनसनीखेज घटना होती है। पटाखों और बमों की आवाजों के बीच अनादी हलदार को उनके घर की बालकनी में गोली मार दी जाती है। गोली सीने को चीरती हुई पीछे निकल जाती है और पूरा घर दहशत में डूब जाता है।
हत्या के बाद कई संदिग्ध सामने आते हैं। अनादी का पुराना साथी केष्टो बाबू, जो उसी शाम उनसे झगड़कर गया था… प्रभात, जो उस रात अपनी दुकान में अकेला काम कर रहा था… और दोनों भतीजे, जिन्हें संपत्ति का लालच था।
जांच के दौरान ब्योमकेश को पता चलता है कि अनादी ने प्रभात को कानूनी रूप से गोद ही नहीं लिया था। इसका मतलब था कि उनकी मौत के बाद सारी संपत्ति सीधे निमाई और निताई को मिलने वाली थी।
मामला और उलझ जाता है जब सामने वाली होटल के तीसरे मंजिल के कमरे में एक अजीब सुराग मिलता है। वहां दीवार पर गोली के निशान जैसा प्लास्टर टूटा हुआ था। होटल मालिक बताता है कि दिवाली की रात एक रहस्यमयी किरायेदार नित्यानंद घोषाल लंबे चमड़े के बैग के साथ वहां आया था।
अब ब्योमकेश को शक होता है कि हत्या बेहद सुनियोजित थी। दिवाली के शोर में गोली की आवाज आसानी से छिपाई जा सकती थी, और लंबा बैग किसी हथियार को छिपाने के लिए बिल्कुल सही था।
लेकिन सबसे बड़ा सवाल अभी बाकी था — क्या गोली बाहर होटल की खिड़की से चलाई गई थी… या फिर अनादी हलदार के अपने ही घर के अंदर से?
क्या निमाई और निताई अपने चाचा की मौत के पीछे थे?
क्या प्रभात सचमुच खतरे में था?
और आखिर “आदिम शत्रु” कौन था, जो वर्षों से सही मौके का इंतजार कर रहा था?
Retired nurse Madhubala Rai arrives at detective Byomkesh Bakshi’s home in a state of fear. She explains that her adopted son Prabhat is in grave danger. Years earlier, while working at Patna Medical College Hospital, Madhubala had raised an abandoned child whose parents were unknown. Later, a wealthy businessman named Anadi Haldar became deeply attached to the boy and decided to make him his heir.
Anadi brought Madhubala and Prabhat to Calcutta, bought Prabhat a bookstore, and treated him like his own son. But Anadi’s greedy nephews — Nimai and Nitai — saw Prabhat as a threat to their inheritance. The two brothers were feared for their violent nature and suspicious behavior.
When Byomkesh visits them pretending to be interested in property business, he immediately senses danger. Guns are openly kept inside the house, and the brothers react aggressively toward strangers.
Soon afterward, a shocking murder takes place on the night of Diwali. Amid exploding firecrackers and loud celebrations, Anadi Haldar is shot dead while standing on the balcony of his house. The bullet tears through his chest and vanishes into the darkness, leaving everyone terrified.
Several suspects quickly emerge. There is Kesto Babu, Anadi’s old companion who had publicly argued with him earlier that evening. Then there is Prabhat himself, who claims he spent the night alone at his bookstore. And of course, Nimai and Nitai, who stood to inherit Anadi’s entire fortune.
During the investigation, Byomkesh uncovers a disturbing truth — Anadi had never legally adopted Prabhat. This meant that after Anadi’s death, all property would legally pass to the nephews.
The mystery deepens when Byomkesh investigates a hotel located directly opposite Anadi’s house. Inside a rented third-floor room, he discovers damaged plaster on the wall that appears to have been struck by a bullet. The hotel owner also reveals that a strange tenant named Nityanand Ghoshal had visited the room that night carrying a long leather bag.
Now Byomkesh realizes the murder may have been carefully planned. The noise of Diwali fireworks could easily hide the sound of gunfire, while the long bag would have been perfect for concealing a rifle.
But one terrifying question still remains unanswered — was the fatal shot fired from the hotel window across the street… or from somewhere inside Anadi Haldar’s own house?
Were Nimai and Nitai truly plotting against their uncle?
Was Prabhat really the next target?
And who was the mysterious “Ancient Enemy” silently waiting for the perfect moment to strike?
