पटना के मशहूर जमींदार दीप नारायण सिंह की हवेली में भव्य दावत चल रही थी। महीनों की बीमारी के बाद दीप नारायण अब स्वस्थ हो चुके थे और इसी खुशी में शहर के बड़े-बड़े लोग वहां इकट्ठा हुए थे। उसी दावत में ब्योमकेश बख्शी और अजीत भी मौजूद थे। लेकिन चमक-दमक से भरी उस हवेली के अंदर लालच, रहस्य और छिपे रिश्तों का खतरनाक खेल चल रहा था।
दीप नारायण की दूसरी पत्नी शकुंतला देवी बेहद खूबसूरत और आधुनिक विचारों वाली महिला थी। उम्र में अपने पति से काफी छोटी होने के कारण उनकी शादी शुरू से ही चर्चा का विषय बनी हुई थी। दूसरी तरफ, दीप नारायण का मोटा और नालायक भतीजा देव नारायण खुद को पहले से ही पूरी संपत्ति का मालिक समझने लगा था।
अगली सुबह दीप नारायण की अचानक मौत हो जाती है। परिवार के डॉक्टर डॉ. पालित ने उन्हें रोज की तरह लीवर एक्सट्रैक्ट का इंजेक्शन दिया था, लेकिन इंजेक्शन लगते ही उनकी हालत बिगड़ गई और कुछ ही मिनटों में उनकी सांस रुक गई।
मामला और रहस्यमयी तब बन जाता है जब पता चलता है कि पिछली रात डॉ. पालित की डिस्पेंसरी में चोरी हुई थी। किसी ने ताला तोड़कर अंदर घुसपैठ की थी, लेकिन सिर्फ कुछ रुपये ही गायब थे। ब्योमकेश तुरंत समझ जाते हैं कि चोरी असली मकसद नहीं थी।
जांच के दौरान कई लोगों पर शक जाता है। हवेली का चालाक मैनेजर, संपत्ति का लालची वारिस देव नारायण, और रईस नवाब नर्मदा शंकर, जिसका शकुंतला देवी के साथ करीबी संबंध होने की चर्चा थी।
लेकिन सबसे बड़ा झटका तब लगता है जब ब्योमकेश को पता चलता है कि शकुंतला देवी गर्भवती हैं — जबकि दीप नारायण महीनों से गंभीर रूप से बीमार थे। अब ब्योमकेश समझ जाते हैं कि हत्या का मकसद सिर्फ संपत्ति नहीं बल्कि एक छिपे हुए प्रेम संबंध और उस अवैध गर्भ को बचाना भी हो सकता है।
इसी बीच केमिकल जांच रिपोर्ट एक नया मोड़ लेती है। जिस इंजेक्शन की शीशी को जहरीला माना जा रहा था, उसमें जहर का कोई निशान नहीं मिलता। अचानक शक डॉ. पालित पर जाने लगता है, लेकिन ब्योमकेश को महसूस होता है कि कोई बहुत चालाकी से सबूत बदल रहा है।
धीरे-धीरे ब्योमकेश को प्रतापगढ़ से जुड़ा एक पुराना रहस्य पता चलता है। युवा पुलिस इंस्पेक्टर रतिकांत और शकुंतला देवी एक-दूसरे से प्यार करते थे, लेकिन हालात ने दोनों को अलग कर दिया था। अब वही रिश्ता एक खतरनाक साजिश में बदल चुका था।
आखिरकार ब्योमकेश एक चाल चलते हैं। हवेली के बाहर लगे लाल पोस्ट बॉक्स, गुप्त चिट्ठियों और आधी रात के जाल के जरिए वह असली हत्यारे को सामने लाने की कोशिश करते हैं।
क्या रतिकांत ने शकुंतला को बचाने के लिए दीप नारायण की हत्या की थी?
क्या डॉ. पालित को जानबूझकर फंसाया गया था?
और आखिर उस रात हवेली के अंधेरे में कौन “आग” था और कौन “पतंगा”?
A grand celebration is organized at the luxurious mansion of wealthy zamindar Deep Narayan Singh, who has recently recovered from a long illness. The party is attended by politicians, businessmen, and influential people from across the city. Detective Byomkesh Bakshi and Ajit are also invited, where they observe the strange atmosphere inside the estate.
Deep Narayan’s much younger wife Shakuntala Devi appears elegant but emotionally distant from her aging husband. Meanwhile, Deep Narayan’s foolish nephew Dev Narayan openly behaves as if he already owns the enormous property. Suspicion and greed seem to surround every corner of the mansion.
The next morning, Deep Narayan suddenly dies moments after receiving a liver extract injection from family doctor Dr. Palit. At first, the death appears natural, but Byomkesh quickly senses foul play. Soon shocking news arrives — Dr. Palit’s dispensary had been mysteriously broken into the previous night.
Inspector Ratikant, a sharp young police officer handling the case, believes someone secretly entered the dispensary and poisoned the injection vial meant for Deep Narayan. Since only a small amount of money was stolen, the burglary itself seems staged.
As the investigation deepens, Byomkesh discovers hidden tensions inside the household. Deep Narayan’s estate manager had financial motives, Dev Narayan stood to inherit the fortune, and wealthy aristocrat Narmada Shankar was rumored to share a close relationship with Shakuntala Devi.
But the biggest shock comes when Byomkesh learns that Shakuntala is secretly pregnant — despite the fact that Deep Narayan had been critically ill for months. Realizing the unborn child could expose a forbidden relationship, Byomkesh suspects the murder was committed not for wealth, but to protect a dangerous secret.
Meanwhile, the chemical analysis report creates further confusion. The injection vial handed over by Dr. Palit contains no poison at all. Suddenly suspicion shifts toward the doctor himself, but Byomkesh feels someone is deliberately manipulating the evidence.
Slowly, Byomkesh uncovers a hidden connection between Shakuntala and Inspector Ratikant. Both belonged to wealthy families from Pratapgarh and had once been deeply in love before circumstances forced Shakuntala into marriage with Deep Narayan Singh.
Byomkesh finally sets a clever trap involving secret letters, a red postbox outside the mansion, and a fake promise of silence. Late at night, shadows move silently through the estate as the detective waits to expose the real killer.
Did Ratikant poison Deep Narayan to save Shakuntala’s honor?
Was Dr. Palit framed through the fake dispensary theft?
And what desperate step was the forbidden couple willing to take to protect their secret forever?
