मणिमय की पत्नी उमा उस नेकलेस को देखकर मंत्रमुग्ध हो जाती है। वह मजाक-मजाक में अपने पति से कहती है कि उसे भी बिल्कुल ऐसा ही नेकलेस चाहिए। मणिमय उसे वादा करता है कि किसी दिन वह उसके लिए वैसा ही हार जरूर बनवाएगा।
रात को मणिमय हमेशा की तरह क्लब में ब्रिज खेलने चला जाता है। देर रात जब वह घर लौटता है, तो उसे मकान के बाहर लैम्पपोस्ट के पास एक संदिग्ध आदमी खड़ा दिखाई देता है। कुछ ही देर बाद परिवार को पता चलता है कि कमरे की दराज में रखा नेकलेस गायब हो चुका है।
घर में हड़कंप मच जाता है और तुरंत पुलिस को बुलाया जाता है। इंस्पेक्टर सन्याल पूरी हवेली की तलाशी लेते हैं। नौकरों से पूछताछ होती है और शक सबसे ज्यादा पुराने नौकर भोला पर जाता है, क्योंकि वही रात में ऊपर के कमरों में आता-जाता था।
लेकिन समस्या यह थी कि नेकलेस कहीं मिलता ही नहीं। पुलिस भोला के भाइयों के घर तक की तलाशी लेती है, फिर भी कोई सुराग नहीं मिलता।
आखिरकार रस्मय सरकार ब्योमकेश बख्शी को बुलाते हैं। ब्योमकेश घर के हर सदस्य पर नजर डालते हैं। उमा को नेकलेस का लालच था, जबकि मणिमय क्लब में लगातार पैसे हार रहा था। इसलिए शक कुछ समय के लिए उन दोनों पर भी जाता है।
लेकिन ब्योमकेश को जल्द एहसास होता है कि अगर मणिमय और उमा ने चोरी की होती, तो भोला जरूर कुछ देख लेता। दूसरी तरफ, भोला पूछताछ के दौरान जरूरत से ज्यादा घबराया हुआ नजर आता है।
तभी ब्योमकेश की नजर घर के बाहर लगे पुराने लाल पोस्ट बॉक्स पर पड़ती है। अचानक पूरी पहेली साफ होने लगती है। दरअसल, भोला शाम को “गमछा खरीदने” के बहाने बाहर गया था, लेकिन असल में वह अपने बड़े भाई भूतनाथ से मिलने गया था, जो डाकिया था।
योजना बेहद चालाक थी — रात में नेकलेस को पोस्ट बॉक्स में छिपा दिया जाए और अगली सुबह डाक निकालते समय चुपचाप उसे बाहर निकाल लिया जाए।
सुबह होने से पहले ही ब्योमकेश और इंस्पेक्टर सन्याल पोस्ट बॉक्स के पास जाल बिछाकर बैठ जाते हैं। लेकिन जब चोरी का नेकलेस बरामद होता है, तब भी ब्योमकेश के मन में कुछ सवाल बाकी रह जाते हैं।
क्या भोला अकेला चोर था?
क्या उमा का नेकलेस के प्रति आकर्षण पूरी तरह मासूम था?
और आखिर मणिमय की देर रात की गतिविधियों में ऐसा क्या था, जिसने ब्योमकेश को शुरू से परेशान कर रखा था?
Jeweller Rasamay Sarkar prepares to send an expensive diamond necklace worth sixty thousand rupees to a Delhi businessman. Manimoy’s young wife Uma is mesmerized after seeing the necklace. She jokingly asks her husband to gift her a similar one someday. Later that night, Manimoy leaves for his regular bridge game at the club while the necklace remains inside the drawer.
Near midnight, Manimoy returns home and notices a suspicious man standing near a lamp post outside the house. Moments later, the family discovers that the necklace has mysteriously disappeared from the drawer. Panic spreads through the house, and the police are immediately called.
Despite searching every room and questioning all the servants, Inspector Sanyal finds no trace of the necklace. Suspicion falls on the old servant Bhola, who had access to the upstairs rooms and had briefly gone outside earlier that evening. However, no stolen jewellery is found either in his belongings or at his brothers’ house.
Unable to solve the mystery, Rasamay requests Byomkesh Bakshi to investigate. Byomkesh carefully studies the behavior of everyone in the house — Manimoy, Uma, and Bhola. Uma clearly admired the necklace, while Manimoy appeared to be losing money regularly at his club games.
But Byomkesh notices something strange. If Manimoy and Uma had truly stolen the necklace together, Bhola would almost certainly have discovered their actions while massaging Rasamay’s feet late at night. Yet Bhola remained unusually nervous throughout the questioning.
Slowly, Byomkesh realizes that the necklace never actually left the property at all.
The breakthrough comes when he notices the old red postbox attached outside the house wall. Suddenly, every clue begins fitting perfectly together. Bhola had secretly contacted his elder brother Bhutanath, a postman, during the evening. The plan was simple — hide the necklace box inside the postbox overnight, then quietly remove it during the next morning’s mail collection.
Before sunrise, Byomkesh and Inspector Sanyal wait near the postbox to trap the thief. But when the hidden package is finally recovered, another unexpected truth begins surfacing about greed, temptation, and betrayal inside the household.
