Byomkesh Bakshi Episode 9: Agnivaan (अग्निवाण, Agniban, অগ্নিবাণ)

एक सुबह घबराया हुआ हाबुल दौड़ता हुआ ब्योमकेश बख्शी के घर पहुंचता है। उसकी छोटी बहन रेखा अचानक रसोईघर में मृत पाई गई थी। कुछ देर पहले तक बिल्कुल स्वस्थ रेखा चूल्हा जलाने गई थी, लेकिन माचिस जलाते ही वहीं गिरकर मर गई। सबसे डरावनी बात यह थी कि जली हुई तीली अब भी उसकी उंगलियों में फंसी हुई थी।

डॉक्टरों की जांच में कोई स्पष्ट कारण सामने नहीं आता। शरीर पर चोट का कोई निशान नहीं था, पेट में जहर नहीं मिला, और दिल भी पूरी तरह स्वस्थ था। पुलिस इस रहस्यमयी मौत को समझ ही नहीं पा रही थी। जांच के दौरान ब्योमकेश को पता चलता है कि रेखा नंटू नाम के युवक से प्यार करती थी, जो लालची डॉक्टर डॉ. रुद्र का बेटा था। दोनों की शादी तय होने वाली थी, लेकिन डॉ. रुद्र ने दस हजार रुपये दहेज की मांग कर रिश्ता तोड़ दिया।

रेखा द्वारा लिखी गई एक चिट्ठी भी मिलती है, जिसमें उसने निराश होकर नंटू से जहर मांगने की बात लिखी थी। पहली नजर में मामला आत्महत्या जैसा लगता है, लेकिन ब्योमकेश को एक बात परेशान करती है — कोई इंसान चूल्हा जलाते समय अचानक आत्महत्या कैसे कर सकता है? इसी बीच रेखा के पिता प्रोफेसर देव कुमार सरकार दिल्ली से लौटते हैं। वह एक प्रतिभाशाली वैज्ञानिक थे, लेकिन आर्थिक तंगी और पारिवारिक कलह से टूट चुके थे। उनकी दूसरी पत्नी से उनका रिश्ता बेहद खराब था। फिर भी वह ब्योमकेश की मदद लेने से साफ इंकार कर देते हैं।

मामला और भयावह तब बन जाता है जब कुछ दिनों बाद हाबुल भी अचानक उसी तरह मर जाता है। उसने अपनी सौतेली मां के कमरे से माचिस लेकर सिगरेट जलाई थी — और अगले ही पल उसकी मौत हो गई। अब ब्योमकेश को सच्चाई का अंदाजा होने लगता है। यह कोई साधारण जहर नहीं था, बल्कि एक ऐसा घातक वैज्ञानिक आविष्कार था जो आग लगते ही अदृश्य जहरीला धुआं छोड़ता था।

One morning, a terrified Habul rushes to the house of Byomkesh Bakshi. His younger sister Rekha had suddenly been found dead in the kitchen. Just moments earlier, she had been perfectly healthy and had gone to light the stove, but the instant she struck a matchstick, she collapsed and died on the spot. The most horrifying detail was that the burnt matchstick was still trapped between her fingers.

Doctors are unable to find any clear cause of death. There were no injury marks on her body, no poison was found in her stomach, and even her heart appeared completely healthy. The police are baffled by the mysterious death. During the investigation, Byomkesh learns that Rekha was in love with a young man named Nantu, the son of the greedy doctor, Dr. Rudra. Their marriage was almost finalized, but Dr. Rudra broke the alliance after demanding a dowry of ten thousand rupees.

A letter written by Rekha is also discovered, in which she had despairingly asked Nantu for poison. At first glance, the case appears to be a suicide, but one question keeps troubling Byomkesh — how could someone suddenly commit suicide while lighting a stove? Meanwhile, Rekha’s father, Professor Deb Kumar Sarkar, returns from Delhi. He was a brilliant scientist, but years of financial hardship and family conflicts had shattered him. His relationship with his second wife was extremely bitter. Even so, he firmly refuses to take Byomkesh’s help.

The case turns even more horrifying a few days later when Habul dies in exactly the same manner. He had borrowed a matchbox from his stepmother’s room to light a cigarette — and the very next moment, he collapsed dead. Now Byomkesh begins to sense the truth. This was no ordinary poison, but a deadly scientific invention that released an invisible toxic gas the moment fire touched it.
