एक दिन ब्योमकेश बख्शी को उनके पुराने मित्र रमेश्वर बाबू का एक अजीब पत्र मिलता है। पत्र में नए साल की शुभकामनाओं के साथ मौत का संकेत छिपा हुआ था। रमेश्वर बाबू लिखते हैं

आप और अजित बाबू मेरी नए साल की शुभकामनाएं गृहन करे। आपकी बुद्धि चंद्रमा की कला की तरह निखरती रहे यही कामना करता हु। अजित बाबू की लेखनी मयूर के पंख के तरह विकसित हो ।मेरा वक़्त हो गया है, यमराज का समन आ गया है। जल्दी ही गिरफ़्तारी का वॉरन्ट निकालने वाला है। मुझे उससे कोई डर नहीं, मै कोशिश मे हूँ की यमराज के वॉरन्ट के पहले ही मै बैकुंठ धाम के द्वार खटखटाऊ। अफसोस सिर्फ इस बात का रह जाएगा की अगली दुर्गा पूजा मे मै पहले की तरह आपको अभिनंदन नहीं जता पाऊँगा।
अपने मरने से पहले मैंने अपनी जमीन जायदाद का बंदोबस्त कर लिया है। आप जरा खयाल रखना मेरी आखिरी इच्छा पूरी हो। आपकी बुद्धि और सूझ-बूझ पर मुझे पूरा भरोसा है।

मेरी इस चिट्ठी को नजरंदाज मत करना।
आपको 5000 रुपए मिले की नहीं मै बैकुंठ से देखूँगा।
कुछ ही दिनों बाद खबर आती है कि रमेश्वर बाबू की हार्ट अटैक से मौत हो गई। उनका परिवार — बेटा कुशेश्वर, बहू लावण्या और मानसिक रूप से कमजोर पत्नी — घर के अंदर अजीब व्यवहार कर रहे थे। दूसरी तरफ उनकी बेटी नलिनी, जिसे परिवार ने सालों पहले घर से अलग कर दिया था, दावा करती है कि पिता उसे संपत्ति में हिस्सा देना चाहते थे।
फैमिली डॉक्टर असीम सेन ब्योमकेश को बताते हैं कि रमेश्वर बाबू अपनी ही हवेली में कैदी की तरह जी रहे थे। बहू लावण्या किसी बाहरी व्यक्ति को उनसे मिलने नहीं देती थी। यहां तक कि उनके पत्र भी चुपके से पढ़े जाते थे।
ब्योमकेश को शक होता है कि रमेश्वर बाबू ने मरने से पहले जरूर कोई वसीयत बनाई होगी। लेकिन पूरे घर की तलाशी लेने के बावजूद कोई दस्तावेज नहीं मिलता। तभी एक छोटी सी बात उनका ध्यान खींचती है — बूढ़े रमेश्वर बाबू को अचानक कच्चा प्याज खाने की आदत क्यों पड़ गई थी?
धीरे-धीरे ब्योमकेश को एहसास होता है कि रमेश्वर बाबू साधारण इंसान नहीं थे। मजाकिया स्वभाव के पीछे उनकी बुद्धि बेहद तेज थी। उन्होंने अपनी वसीयत ऐसी जगह छिपाई थी, जहां किसी का ध्यान ही नहीं जा सकता था।
जांच के दौरान ब्योमकेश पुराने खत, किताबें और कागज खंगालने लगते हैं। तभी उन्हें याद आता है कि रमेश्वर बाबू ने अपनी चिट्ठी में खास तौर पर लिखा था — “मेरी इस चिट्ठी को नजरअंदाज मत करना।”
अब ब्योमकेश समझ जाते हैं कि असली रहस्य किसी तिजोरी या अलमारी में नहीं, बल्कि उसी खत में छिपा है जिसे सबने साधारण शुभकामना पत्र समझकर नजरअंदाज कर दिया था।
क्या रमेश्वर बाबू ने सचमुच अपनी वसीयत दुनिया की नजरों से छिपा दी थी?
क्या नलिनी को उसके पिता की संपत्ति मिल पाएगी?
और आखिर उस रहस्यमयी पत्र में ऐसा क्या छिपा था जिसे पढ़कर ब्योमकेश भी हैरान रह गए?
A Byomkesh Bakshi Mystery Story
One day, detective Byomkesh Bakshi receives a strange New Year letter from his old friend Rameshwar Babu. The letter is filled with humor, blessings, and mysterious hints about death. Rameshwar writes.

Wish you and Ajit Babu my new year greetings. I wish that your intellect continues to shine like the art of the moon. Ajit Babu’s pen should grow like a feather of a peacock.My time is almost over. Yamraj’s summons has arrived. Soon the warrant of arrest is out. I have no fear of that, I am trying to knock the doors of Baikuntha Dham before Yamraj’s warrant. The only regret will be that in the next Durga Puja, I will not be able to greet you like before.
Before I die, I have arranged my land property. You take care my last wish is fulfilled. I have full faith in your intelligence and understanding.

A few days later, news arrives that Rameshwar Babu has died of a heart attack. His large family immediately comes under suspicion. His son Kusheshwar and daughter-in-law Lavanya had complete control over the household, while his daughter Nalini had been separated from the family for years because of family disputes.
Family doctor Dr. Asim Sen reveals something disturbing to Byomkesh — Rameshwar Babu was practically living like a prisoner inside his own house. Visitors were restricted, his letters were secretly checked, and Lavanya carefully monitored everyone around him.
Byomkesh becomes convinced that the old man had secretly prepared a will before his death. However, even after a detailed police search, no document can be found anywhere inside the mansion. But during the investigation, one unusual detail catches Byomkesh’s attention — why had Rameshwar suddenly developed an obsession with eating raw onions shortly before his death?
Slowly, Byomkesh realizes that behind Rameshwar Babu’s cheerful personality was an extremely sharp and playful mind. The old man had hidden his final will in a place nobody would ever suspect.
As Byomkesh re-examines old letters, books, and papers, he suddenly remembers one important line written in the mysterious New Year greeting — “Do not ignore this letter.”
Now the detective understands that the real secret was never hidden inside a locker or cupboard. The answer had been lying quietly inside the ordinary-looking letter all along.
