उसी रात अशोक पर जानलेवा हमला होता है। सामने वाले खाली मकान से किसी ने पिस्तौल से गोली चलाई, जो उसके सिर को छूते हुए निकल गई। घायल अशोक को अस्पताल ले जाया जाता है और मामले की जांच के लिए ब्योमकेश बख्शी को बुलाया जाता है।
जांच के दौरान पता चलता है कि गंगापद असल में लोहे की फैक्ट्री में “मेल्टर” का काम करता था। वहीं उसका पुराना झगड़ा नरेश मंडल नाम के खतरनाक आदमी से हुआ था। कुछ साल पहले नरेश को एक हत्या के मामले में जेल हुई थी और उस केस में गंगापद मुख्य गवाह बना था।
धीरे-धीरे ब्योमकेश को एहसास होता है कि यह हमला वास्तव में अशोक पर नहीं बल्कि गंगापद पर होना था। गंगापद ने जानबूझकर अपने जैसे चेहरे वाले अशोक को घर में रखा था ताकि असली दुश्मन उसे गंगापद समझकर मारने की कोशिश करे।
लेकिन कहानी इससे भी ज्यादा खतरनाक थी। गंगापद खुद पूरी तरह निर्दोष नहीं था। उसने वर्षों पहले नरेश को फँसाकर उसकी नौकरी हथियाई थी। अब जेल से छूटने के बाद नरेश बदला लेने वापस आया था।
ब्योमकेश समझ जाते हैं कि दोनों आदमी अपराध और धोखे के जाल में फँसे हुए हैं — एक बदले की आग में जल रहा था और दूसरा अपनी जान बचाने के लिए किसी मासूम की जिंदगी दांव पर लगा चुका था।

That very night, someone fires a pistol shot at Ashok from an abandoned building across the street. The bullet narrowly misses his head, leaving him badly injured. Ashok is rushed to the hospital, and detective Byomkesh Bakshi is called to investigate the attempted murder.
As the investigation progresses, Byomkesh learns that Gangapad worked in an iron factory as a skilled electrical melter. Years earlier, he had testified against a violent worker named Naresh Mandal, who was later imprisoned in a murder case. Soon after Naresh went to jail, Gangapad received a promotion and took over his position.
Slowly, Byomkesh realizes a terrifying truth — the bullet was never meant for Ashok. Gangapad had deliberately chosen a man who looked like him and placed him inside the house as bait. He believed that if Naresh returned for revenge, he would mistake Ashok for Gangapad and attack him instead.
But the mystery grows darker when Byomkesh discovers that Gangapad himself may not be innocent. Years ago, he had manipulated circumstances to push Naresh out of the factory and secure his own promotion. After being released from prison, Naresh disappeared without contacting anyone, suggesting that revenge was still burning inside him.
Now Byomkesh understands that both men are trapped in a dangerous web of lies, fear, and betrayal — one desperate to save his own life, and the other consumed by hatred.
To expose the truth, Byomkesh publishes a fake newspaper advertisement for experienced factory melters, hoping both suspects will appear. But when the trap finally works, the confrontation takes a shocking turn nobody expected.
