MBA… Shame B.A. | MBA Admission Fraud Case
This story is based on an education-related fraud racket that was exposed by the Mumbai Crime Branch in May 2013. The scam was uncovered at the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), which conducts the NMAT (Narsee Monjee Management Aptitude Test) for admission into its MBA programs.
NMIMS MBA admission fraud investigationUniversity officials became suspicious when certain candidates scored exceptionally well in the written examination but performed poorly during group discussions and personal interviews. The management of NMIMS reported the matter to the Mumbai Crime Branch. During the initial investigation, police discovered a possible loophole in the examination process that allowed dummy candidates to appear for the test on behalf of actual applicants.
Mumbai Crime Branch education scam caseDuring interrogation, one student revealed that while attending coaching classes, he was introduced by the coaching center in-charge to a person claiming to be a career counsellor. This individual offered guaranteed admission to NMIMS through the management quota in exchange for ₹20 lakh. He assured students that they would not have to appear for the written examination and would be directly called for the group discussion and personal interview rounds.
The investigation gradually exposed a larger admission racket involving impersonation, dummy candidates, and fraudulent admission promises. The Mumbai Crime Branch worked to uncover the network behind the scam and identify those involved.
