Hands Chopped Off Over Forced Labour Escape

Village Chakrapada, Orissa.
Affected by extreme poverty, the villagers of Chakrapada begin searching for better employment opportunities. Two brokers, Gopal and Karan, arrive in the village promising well-paying jobs in Raipur. Raman, Debashish, Urvashi, Vikas, Sampat, Chirag, Adinath, Makrand, Damini, Radhika, and Poonam agree to travel with them in hopes of building a better future.

The brokers take them to Kundarmal, where they are handed over to a contractor named Kailash. Kailash pays twenty thousand rupees for each labourer, while Gopal and Karan keep five thousand rupees each as commission. They assure the villagers that their share of the money will be sent to their families.

Kailash later takes them to a brick kiln, but no work is available there. A man named Satya then arranges work for them in Hyderabad through one of his contacts. The labourers are taken to the railway station, and only a few minutes before departure, Satya reveals that they are being sent to Hyderabad. Shocked and frightened because Hyderabad is far away from their village, they refuse to go. However, Satya forces them to board the train because advance payments had already been made for them.

During the journey, while Satya is asleep, the labourers quietly get off the train at an unknown station and decide to separate while returning home through different routes. Debashish, Raman, Urvashi, and her son Vikas travel back towards Raipur by train. While Debashish and Raman are checking train schedules, Kailash’s men capture them.

उड़ीसा के चक्रपाड़ा गाँव के लोग गरीबी से त्रस्त हैं तभी गाँव में दो दलाल करन और गोपाल आते हैं. वो दोनों गाँव वालों को रायपुर में अच्छी नौकरी का लालच देते हैं. रमन, देबाशीष, उर्वशी, विकास, संपत, चिराग, आदिनाथ, मकरंद, दामिनी, राधिका और पूनम ज़िंदगी को बेहतर बनाने के लिए गोपाल और करन के साथ रायपुर जाने को तैयार हो जाते हैं. वो दोनों उनको कुंदरमल ले जाते हैं जहाँ उन सबको कैलाश नाम के एक ठेकेदार के हवाले कर दिया जाता है. कैलाश गोपाल और करन को हर मजदूर के लिए बीस हज़ार रुपये देता है. गोपाल और करन अपने हिस्से की पाँच-पाँच हज़ार रुपये कमीशन रख लेते हैं और वादा करते हैं कि गाँव वालों का हिस्सा उनके घरवालों तक पहुँचा दिया जाएगा.

कैलाश अपने साथियों के साथ इन लोगों को एक ईंट भट्ठे पर ले जाता है मगर वहाँ इनके लिए कोई काम नहीं होता. सत्या हैदराबाद में अपने एक दोस्त से बात करता है जिसे मजदूरों की ज़रूरत है. इन सब लोगों को स्टेशन ले जाया जाता है और ट्रेन छूटने के कुछ मिनट पहले सत्या बताता है कि वह इन्हें हैदराबाद ले जा रहा है. सब लोग चौंक जाते हैं और वहाँ नहीं जाना चाहते क्योंकि हैदराबाद बहुत दूर है. सत्या ज़बरदस्ती सबको ट्रेन में बैठने को बोलता है. ट्रेन के चलने के बाद ये लोग बीच के एक स्टेशन पर उतर जाते हैं जबकि सत्या सो रहा होता है. वहाँ से सब लोग अलग-अलग रास्तों से वापस गाँव जाने की योजना बनाते हैं. देबाशीष, रमन, उर्वशी और उसका बेटा विकास ट्रेन के रास्ते वापस आते हैं. देबाशीष और रमन ट्रेन का पता लगाने के लिए जाते हैं तभी कैलाश के आदमी उन दोनों को पकड़ लेते हैं.

The story is based on a real incident from Orissa where the hands of two migrant labourers were chopped off by a labour contractor.

The victims were identified as Jialu Nial (30) and Nilambar Dhangdamajhi (28), who reached a government hospital at Bhawanipatana in Kalahandi district, nearly 500 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar.

According to police, the accused contractor paid Rs. 14,000 in advance to twelve labourers, including five women from different villages of Kalahandi district. They were initially brought to work in a brick kiln in Andhra Pradesh.

Later, the contractor forcibly attempted to take them to Raipur, Chhattisgarh, to work at another brick kiln. The labourers resisted and all of them, except Nial and Dhangdamajhi, managed to escape when the group stopped at Sinapali in the neighbouring Nuapada district.

The contractor and his accomplices allegedly held the two labourers captive and tortured them in an undisclosed village in Nuapada.
