The incident was reported on 8 April when a 24-year-old woman from Bihar, who had returned from Ludhiana during the nationwide lockdown, was allegedly molested while hospitalized and died a few days later. As migrant workers across the country struggled to return home during the lockdown, this shocking case emerged from Gaya district, Bihar.
Dharmendra Chaudhary and his wife returned to Bihar from Ludhiana on 25 March. Dharmendra worked as a bicycle painter in Ludhiana, but the lockdown brought his livelihood to a halt, leaving the family in financial distress. His wife, who was two months pregnant, had undergone an abortion due to excessive bleeding. As the bleeding continued and their financial condition worsened, Dharmendra arranged an ambulance to bring her back to Bihar. Upon reaching Gaya, she was admitted to the emergency ward of Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital.
According to Dharmendra’s mother, the ambulance charged ₹40,000 for the journey from Ludhiana. Both Dharmendra’s family and his in-laws contributed to arranging the money. Initially, his wife was treated at a government hospital in Sherghati, but when her condition did not improve, she was referred to the medical college. Due to her travel history and the possibility of COVID-19 infection, she was admitted to the isolation ward on 1 April.
During this period, she stayed alone in the ward. It was alleged that a doctor took advantage of the situation and molested her on 2 and 3 April.
घटना रिपोर्ट हुई थी इसी साल 8 अप्रैल को, जब बिहार के गया में अस्पताल में भर्ती एक 24 वर्षीय महिला के साथ दुराचार और उसकी मृत्यु का मामला सामने आया था। देशव्यापी लॉकडाउन के दौरान, जब पूरे देश में मजदूर वर्ग का पलायन जारी था, उसी बीच बिहार के गया जिले से यह घटना सामने आई।
धर्मेंद्र चौधरी और उसकी पत्नी 25 मार्च को लुधियाना से अपने घर बिहार लौटे थे। धर्मेंद्र लुधियाना में साइकिल पेंटिंग का काम करता था, लेकिन लॉकडाउन के कारण उसका काम बंद हो गया और आर्थिक संकट पैदा हो गया। उसकी पत्नी दो महीने की गर्भवती थी, लेकिन अत्यधिक रक्तस्राव के कारण उसका गर्भपात कराना पड़ा। इसके बाद भी रक्तस्राव नहीं रुका और रोज़गार समाप्त होने की वजह से धर्मेंद्र उसे एम्बुलेंस से बिहार लेकर आया। गया पहुंचने के बाद उसे अनुग्रह नारायण मगध मेडिकल कॉलेज एवं अस्पताल के इमरजेंसी वार्ड में भर्ती कराया गया।
धर्मेंद्र की माँ के अनुसार, एम्बुलेंस ने लुधियाना से बिहार तक लाने के लिए 40 हजार रुपये लिए थे, जो धर्मेंद्र के परिवार और ससुराल पक्ष ने मिलकर जुटाए थे। महिला को पहले शेरघाटी के सरकारी अस्पताल में दिखाया गया, लेकिन कोई सुधार न होने पर उसे मेडिकल कॉलेज ले जाया गया। इलाज के दौरान कोविड संक्रमण की आशंका और यात्रा इतिहास को देखते हुए उसे 1 अप्रैल को आइसोलेशन वार्ड में भर्ती किया गया था।
उस दौरान वह वार्ड में अकेली रहती थी और आरोप था कि इसी का फायदा उठाकर एक डॉक्टर ने 2 और 3 अप्रैल को उसके साथ दुराचार किया।
