सोफिया के बॉयफ्रेंड आदित्य दुबे ने पुलिस को बताया कि सोफिया जॉन और करीम के साथ छुट्टी पर जा रही थी। तीन दिनों तक उसका कोई संदेश या कॉल नहीं आया। पुलिस को शक था कि जॉन और करीम ने ही सोफिया की हत्या की है।

पूछताछ में पता चला कि करीम सोफिया से प्यार करता था, लेकिन सोफिया ने उसके प्रस्ताव को ठुकरा दिया था। वह आदित्य से प्यार करती थी। करीम ने गुस्से में कहा, “मेरी नहीं हुई तो किसी की नहीं होगी।”

जॉन और करीम ने सोफिया की डायरी चुरा ली थी। डायरी पढ़कर वे टूट गए, लेकिन तब तक बहुत देर हो चुकी थी। उन्होंने सोफिया का गला घोंट दिया और शव नाले में फेंक दिया।

दोनों पर IPC की धारा 302 और 201 के तहत मामला दर्ज किया गया। करीम को अपने किए पर पछतावा है, लेकिन पछतावा तब काम आता है जब शिकवा दूर करने की क्षमता हो।

The case remained unsolved for over three months, with the body unidentified. After a tip-off from Rakesh, police finally identified the victim as Rajni Mane, a bar girl. The killer had been living in the illusion that his crime would never be uncovered. But the unidentified body finally had a name.
