The Joshi Abhyankar case is considered one of the most shocking and brutal serial murder cases in the history of Pune, Maharashtra. The horrifying crimes created panic across the city during the late 1970s and remain one of India’s most discussed criminal cases even today. The case involved four young college students who kidnapped, robbed, and murdered several innocent people in Pune.

The gang was led by Dilip Sutar, along with Jagdish Joshi, Sudhakar Abhyankar, and Rajendra Jakkal. These young men appeared ordinary from the outside, but their criminal activities shocked the entire nation after the truth came out. The murders mainly targeted people for money, vehicles, and personal belongings. Their violent methods and lack of remorse made the case extremely disturbing.

These murders were executed between 1976 and 1977. They all were students of Arts at Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya located at Tilak Road, Pune. The gang used manipulation, kidnapping, and brutal murder techniques to eliminate victims. Many of the crimes involved strangulation and body disposal in isolated locations around Pune.

One of the most terrifying aspects of the Joshi Abhyankar murders was the psychological mindset of the accused. Despite belonging to educated backgrounds, they became involved in greed, thrill-seeking, and violent criminal behavior. Their actions not only destroyed several families but also changed the perception of safety in Pune during that period.

The Pune Police launched a detailed investigation after multiple missing person complaints and suspicious murder patterns emerged. As evidence slowly connected the crimes, police uncovered the gang’s involvement in serial killings. The arrests shocked the local community because the accused were educated youngsters rather than hardened criminals.

After they were caught, they were hanged to death on 27th November 1983. The court described the crimes as extremely rare and brutal. The execution marked the end of one of Maharashtra’s most infamous criminal chapters.

The Joshi Abhyankar case has inspired filmmakers and crime writers over the years. Well known director Anurag Kashyap made Paanch (2003) based on this case, but the film could not get clearance from the Censor Board for a long time due to its dark and disturbing content.

There is also a Marathi movie featuring Nana Patekar named Maficha Sakshidar (1986), which was inspired by the events surrounding the case. Even decades later, the Joshi Abhyankar murders continue to fascinate true crime followers and remain an important chapter in Indian criminal history.
