लेकिन जब वे ऊपर वाले कमरे में जाते हैं, तो प्राणहरी की लाश फर्श पर पड़ी मिलती है। उसके सिर पर किसी भारी हथियार से वार किया गया था। कमरे में दस हजार रुपये नकद पड़े थे, लेकिन कुछ भी चोरी नहीं हुआ था।
मामले की जांच के लिए ब्योमकेश बख्शी को बुलाया जाता है। घर में रहने वाली नौकरानी मोहिनी बताती है कि चारों युवक अक्सर वहां ताश खेलने आते थे। पुलिस को भी शक उन्हीं पर जाता है क्योंकि हत्या वाली रात उन्हें उसी रास्ते जाते देखा गया था।
जांच के दौरान ब्योमकेश को पता चलता है कि प्राणहरी बाहर से साधारण महाजन लगता था, लेकिन असल में बेहद लालची और चालाक आदमी था। वह लोगों को कर्ज देकर, ब्लैकमेल करके और जुए के जरिए पैसा कमाता था।
धीरे-धीरे एक और रहस्य सामने आता है — मोहिनी का पति भुवनेश्वर दास। वह पहले मोटर गैरेज में काम करता था और अब टैक्सी ड्राइवर बन चुका था। प्राणहरी ने उसे कर्ज देकर अपने जाल में फंसा लिया था। इतना ही नहीं, वह मोहिनी को अमीर लड़कों के सामने लालच के रूप में इस्तेमाल कर रहा था।

Four wealthy young men — Phanish, Arvind, Madhumoy, and Mrigen — regularly spent their nights playing bridge at the local club. At first, the games appear harmless, but soon the young men realize that Pran Hari is secretly cheating with marked cards and hidden tricks. Over several nights, he wins thousands of rupees from them. Furious and humiliated, the four friends decide to visit his house one night and teach him a lesson.
But when they finally enter the upstairs room, they discover something horrifying — Pran Hari Poddar is lying dead on the floor with his skull crushed by a heavy blow. Strangely, ten thousand rupees in cash remain untouched inside the room, proving that robbery was not the motive.
Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is called to investigate the murder. The household maid, Mohini, reveals that the four young men often visited the house to gamble. Police immediately begin suspecting them because witnesses saw them traveling toward Pran Hari’s house on the night of the murder.
As Byomkesh digs deeper, he uncovers Pran Hari’s true nature. Behind the image of a simple moneylender was a greedy and manipulative man who made money through blackmail, gambling, and exploitation. He enjoyed trapping desperate people in debt and controlling their lives.
Soon another important figure enters the mystery — Bhubaneshwar Das, Mohini’s missing husband. Once a mechanic, he had become a taxi driver after borrowing money from Pran Hari. Slowly, Byomkesh realizes that Pran Hari had deliberately used Mohini to attract wealthy young men and profit from them.
Now the detective understands that the murder was not committed for money. It was the result of rage against a man who treated human relationships like business transactions.
Everything changes when Byomkesh discovers that the killer had attacked using the left hand. Suddenly, suspicion begins shifting away from the four gamblers toward someone nobody had seriously considered before.
