Just days after the infamous Nirbhaya case in Delhi, a married couple accused their landlord, Dinesh Gaur, of sexually harassing the wife, Purnima Lalchand. Purnima and her husband Rajesh Lalchand were living in Dinesh’s rented apartment and had fallen behind on rent payments for nearly three months.
According to the complaint, Dinesh visited the couple’s home to collect the overdue rent. Shortly afterward, Purnima accused him of taking advantage of her while she was alone. The couple filed an FIR against him, and the police took immediate action. Dinesh was arrested and eventually spent nearly three months in jail.
The episode is inspired by a real-life case that emerged in the aftermath of the Nirbhaya incident, when allegations of sexual harassment received intense public and media attention.
The real incident took place in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Landlord Rupkishor Agrawal was accused of physically harassing his tenant Chanchal, the wife of Sunil Rathaur. Chanchal and her family lived in one of Rupkishor’s apartments in Mahadev Totla Nagar, while Rupkishor resided at Shubh Labh Residency near Khanjarana Square.
According to the FIR, Chanchal was alone at home when the incident allegedly occurred. Her husband was at work and the children were at school. The complaint stated that Rupkishor attempted to take advantage of her situation while she was alone.
The case attracted widespread media attention because it surfaced shortly after the Nirbhaya case, a period when crimes against women were under intense public scrutiny. The allegations, investigation, and legal proceedings became the subject of significant debate regarding justice, public perception, and due process.
The episode explores how serious accusations can dramatically affect the lives of everyone involved and examines the challenges faced by investigators when dealing with sensitive cases involving allegations of sexual misconduct.
