The Long Wait |

Seventy-three-year-old Rajeshwari Kadam climbs the temple stairs every day, praying for justice for her daughter Gayatri and her innocent child. The case has remained unresolved for seventeen years, until an old file is suddenly placed before a determined officer. Inspector More remembers the crime scene in Pune, where 26-year-old Gayatri and her thirty-day-old baby lost their lives.
The story then returns to the past. Gayatri, who lives with her mother in Wai and works at a hotel in Panchgani, meets Delhi-based salesman Arvind Vaykar. Their first encounter develops into a relationship, and Arvind repeatedly returns to see her. When Gayatri discovers that she is pregnant, she expects Arvind to marry her, but he begins avoiding her and insists that she terminate the pregnancy.
Gayatri refuses to abandon her unborn child. With her mother’s reluctant support, she moves to Pune and seeks help through a volunteer named Pooja. A complaint is prepared, while Arvind disappears from Delhi and cannot be traced. The possibility of a DNA test becomes important in establishing the child’s biological father.
During this difficult period, Vijay Kamble enters their lives and begins helping Gayatri and Rajeshwari with medical care and everyday needs. After the baby is born, Vijay assists with official paperwork. But when Rajeshwari goes to collect the child’s birth certificate, the records contain a disturbing discrepancy: Gayatri’s name cannot be found. Soon, phone calls go unanswered, documents appear questionable, and the family faces a mystery that changes everything.

The Anchal Cold Case: A 19-Year Wait for Answers
In February 2006, a shocking case unfolded in Anchal, Kollam, Kerala. Ranjini, a young mother, and her 17-day-old twin daughters were found dead at their rented home. What followed was an investigation that would stretch across nearly two decades.
Two Army personnel, Divil Kumar and Rajesh P, became suspects in the case. After the investigation, both were reported to have disappeared, leaving investigators with unanswered questions and a case that gradually became one of Kerala’s long-running cold cases.
The investigation eventually moved beyond the local police and was handed over to the CBI in 2010. A chargesheet was filed in 2013, but the suspects remained out of reach. Then, years later, investigators returned to the old photographs. This time, technology offered a new possibility.
Kerala Police’s Technical Intelligence Wing reportedly used AI-based age-progression techniques to estimate how an old photograph might look nearly 19 years later. Multiple versions were created, with changes in hairstyle, facial features and aging patterns. One of these AI-generated possibilities reportedly helped investigators identify a potential social-media lead.
Importantly, AI did not prove the case by itself. It provided a lead that investigators had to verify through other evidence and investigative work.
In January 2025, the CBI arrested the two accused in Puducherry.
The story is ultimately about more than artificial intelligence. It is about a case that remained open for years, investigators who continued looking for answers, and a mother, Santhamma, who waited for the day when the people accused in connection with her daughter and grandchildren’s deaths would once again come within the reach of the law.
