गौरी ने बहुत पहले ही लोगों की अच्छाई पर भरोसा करना छोड़ दिया था।
गोरखपुर की जिला जेल में बंद अठारह साल की गौरी अब गुस्से और दर्द के सहारे जी रही थी। इसलिए जब एक महिला सिपाही ने आकर बताया कि कोई बुज़ुर्ग दंपति उससे मिलने आया है, तो उसने तुरंत मना कर दिया।
“मैं उन्हें नहीं जानती।”
लेकिन जेल के बाहर रतन प्रकाश मिश्रा और उनकी पत्नी सरोज घंटों से इंतज़ार कर रहे थे। उन्होंने अख़बार में गौरी की दर्दनाक कहानी पढ़ी थी, और तभी से वह लड़की उनके दिल में बस गई थी। दो बेटे होने के बावजूद उनके जीवन में हमेशा एक बेटी की कमी महसूस होती रही। अब उन्हें लगने लगा था कि शायद किस्मत गौरी को उनकी ज़िंदगी में किसी वजह से लाई है।
जेल प्रशासन भी हैरान था। आखिर एक सम्मानित परिवार जेल में बंद लड़की को गोद क्यों लेना चाहता है?
पत्रकार विजय उपाध्याय ने जब इस मामले की तह तक जाना शुरू किया, तो गौरी की टूटी हुई ज़िंदगी के पन्ने खुलने लगे।
उत्तर प्रदेश के बेहद गरीब परिवार में जन्मी गौरी ने बचपन से भूख और मजबूरी देखी थी। रोज़गार की तलाश में उसका परिवार पंजाब चला गया, जहाँ खेतों में मजदूरी करके दो वक्त की रोटी जुटाई जाती थी। कुछ समय के लिए लगा कि शायद जिंदगी संभल रही है।
लेकिन बदकिस्मती ने फिर दरवाज़ा खटखटा दिया।
गरीबी और बेबसी से टूटी उसकी माँ ने एक ऐसा फैसला लिया जिसने गौरी की पूरी दुनिया बदल दी। सात साल की छोटी गौरी को रेलवे स्टेशन पर अकेला छोड़ दिया गया — बिना किसी जवाब के, बिना वापस लौटे।
डरी हुई गौरी घंटों वहीं बैठी रही। फिर उसकी जिंदगी में ऐसे लोग आए जिन्होंने कभी सहारा दिया, तो कभी उसका इस्तेमाल किया। एक जगह से दूसरी जगह भटकते-भटकते वह सुधार गृह पहुँची और फिर एक ऐसे मामले में जेल भेज दी गई, जिसमें उसका दावा था कि उसने कोई अपराध नहीं किया।
धीरे-धीरे उसके भीतर भरोसा मर चुका था।
लेकिन मिश्रा दंपति हार मानने को तैयार नहीं थे। जितना वे गौरी के बारे में जान रहे थे, उतना ही उन्हें महसूस हो रहा था कि उनका उससे कोई अनजाना रिश्ता है। सरोज को तो ऐसा लगने लगा था जैसे किस्मत बरसों से उन्हें इसी दिन तक ला रही थी।
उधर गौरी अब किसी पर भरोसा नहीं करना चाहती थी — ना रिश्तों पर, ना प्यार पर, ना दुनिया पर।
और जैसे-जैसे विजय उसकी जिंदगी के राज़ खोलता गया, एक सवाल और गहरा होता गया —
क्या इतने दर्द के बाद गौरी फिर कभी किसी अपने को स्वीकार कर पाएगी, या उसकी किस्मत ने उसके लिए कुछ और ही लिख रखा था?
Gauri (real name ‘Seema’ and played by Ahsaas Channa), spent five years in jail in Gorakhpur district on a theft charge, though she denies being a thief. Her story was published by a news reporter in an article titled “Iss raat ki subah nahi.” The article describes Gauri’s life, including her renter status with her family of father, mother, and brother. They were thrown out of their home by their landlord due to their economic weakness. One day, Gauri’s father dies in an accident, and her mother becomes depressed and leaves with Gauri’s brother, leaving Gauri at the Gorakhpur railway station. A taxi driver takes Gauri to a woman known as Bua, who hires her as a servant. Gauri spends six years in Bua’s home before Bua falsely accuses her of stealing valuable jewellry and plans to send her away.
Gauri had stopped believing in kindness long ago.
Inside a district jail in Gorakhpur, the eighteen-year-old had learned that every smile came with a hidden motive. So when a guard informed her that an elderly couple had come to meet her, she immediately refused.
“I don’t know them.”
But outside the prison gates, Ratan Prakash Mishra and his wife Saroj waited patiently. They had recently read a newspaper article about Gauri’s tragic life, and something about her story deeply moved them. Though they had raised two successful sons, they had always wished for a daughter. Now, for reasons they themselves could not fully explain, they wanted to adopt Gauri.
The prison authorities were confused. Why would a respected elderly couple want to bring a jailed girl into their family?
Reporter Vijay Upadhyay became curious too. As he investigated Gauri’s past, a heartbreaking story slowly unfolded.
Born into extreme poverty in Uttar Pradesh, Gauri spent her childhood watching her parents struggle daily for food and work. Hoping for a better life, the family migrated to Punjab, where they worked as laborers. For a short while, things seemed stable.
Then tragedy struck again.
Crushed by poverty and desperation, Gauri’s mother made a devastating decision. One day, seven-year-old Gauri was left alone at a railway station and never saw her family again.
Terrified and hungry, the little girl wandered through unfamiliar streets until strangers took her in. Some helped her, others exploited her. As years passed, Gauri was pushed from one painful situation to another, eventually landing in a correction home for a crime she claimed she never committed.
By the time she reached district jail, anger had become her only protection.
Yet the Mishras refused to give up on her.
The more they learned about Gauri, the more convinced they became that fate had somehow connected their lives. Saroj especially felt an emotional bond she could not explain. Even an old astrologer’s prediction about them one day receiving the blessing of a daughter began haunting their thoughts.
But Gauri trusted nobody anymore.
Not families. Not promises. Not love.
As Vijay uncovered more secrets from her past, one question remained unanswered — could a girl abandoned by everyone learn to believe in humanity again, or had life already pushed her too far into darkness?
