Kesari Escapes After Forced Marriage With 55-Year-Old Akhilendra

Real Story of Minati Gagaral From Keonjhar District

Watch the real story of Dugi alias Minati Gagaral and her photograph with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
At 14, Minati Gagaral from Orissa bravely refused to marry a 50-year-old man. Threatened by her brother and forced to leave home, she survived in a forest for days before seeking help from locals and police. Honoured with the National Bravery Award, Minati now lives under NGO protection, learns to read and write, and hopes to become a master craftsperson.

In a remote village surrounded by the dense forests of Keonjhar district, Odisha, 13-year-old Kesari lived with her mother Kunti and elder brother Suraj. Her days were simple—grazing goats, helping at home, and spending time with her friend Megha. Everything changed during the village’s annual fair, where an old custom allowed a man to fill a girl’s hair parting with sindoor and immediately claim her as his wife. Akhilendra, an influential landlord approaching fifty who had already married four times, chose Kesari and publicly filled her maang with sindoor.

Kesari refused to accept him as her husband. Her family and villagers, terrified of the landlord’s influence and bound by tradition, pressured her to surrender. Threats of a village council, social boycott, and punishment made the situation increasingly dangerous. Rather than accept a forced marriage, Kesari fled into the dense forest. Alone among wild animals, hunger, exhaustion, and darkness, the 13-year-old survived nine terrifying days and nights. When her strength and hope were nearly exhausted, something changed. Kesari eventually emerged from the forest and reached a police station seeking protection. Her extraordinary resistance had now moved beyond a family dispute—but whether the law could protect her from a powerful landlord and an entire village’s traditions remained uncertain.
