Half a Life with Half a Face
Sonali Mukherjee Acid Attack Story
NEW DELHI:
Before four months, Sonali Mukherjee — the acid attack survivor from Dhanbad — was struggling emotionally and felt hopeless because of the unbearable suffering she had endured. Now, Sonali has won 25 lakh rupees on Amitabh Bachchan’s quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati and wants to use the prize money for her reconstructive surgeries.
Along with this, she also wishes to use her painful experience to support acid attack survivors around the world, especially women, who continue to suffer from such brutal crimes every year.
“I have already undergone 22 operations and 9 more are still remaining. Now my eyes and ears are functional and at least I can see and hear properly. Once I fully recover, I want to help people like me. During these nine years, I have faced every difficult situation and I understand that very few people help you in such circumstances.”
Sonali became a major media headline after her heartbreaking story was portrayed earlier this year on Sony TV’s Crime Patrol on 24th and 25th August. As Crime Patrol is one of the most popular Indian crime-based television shows, many charities, hospitals, and thousands of viewers came forward to support her in every possible way.
Another major turning point in her life was her participation in Kaun Banega Crorepati, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan.
“I never imagined in my life that I would meet such a great personality. Meeting Big B was one of the biggest moments of my life.”
Sonali answered questions confidently from subjects like botany, cooking, and political science, eventually winning 25 lakh rupees.
According to reports, around 1500 acid attacks are reported every year worldwide, and nearly 80% of the victims are women.
Sonali further appealed:
“I request the government to create a strong law that is not limited to paperwork only, but is strictly implemented so that such crimes do not happen again.”
