ओडिशा के पटनाग़ढ़ में 23 फरवरी 2018 को एक ऐसा पार्सल पहुँचा, जिसने एक परिवार की ज़िंदगी हमेशा के लिए बदल दी। शादी के कुछ दिनों बाद सौम्य शेखर साहू के घर पहुँचे इस पार्सल को जब खोला गया, तो उसमें ज़ोरदार धमाका हुआ। इस घटना में सौम्य और उनकी दादी की मौत हो गई, जबकि उनकी पत्नी रीमा घायल हो गईं।
धमाके के बाद पुलिस ने जाँच शुरू की और घटनास्थल से सबूत जुटाए। हालांकि, शुरुआती जाँच में मामले को कोई स्पष्ट दिशा नहीं मिल सकी। इसके बाद जाँच क्राइम ब्रांच को सौंप दी गई।
