The Brutal Murder That Inspired Crime Patrol Episode 28
This episode is based on the murder of Neeraj Grover (portrayed as Suraj in the episode), one of India’s most shocking and widely discussed murder cases. Neeraj, a young man from Uttar Pradesh, moved to Mumbai to build a career in the television industry. He worked as a creative executive and was involved in auditions for a television series titled Mahabharat.
During the auditions, Neeraj became friends with Maria Monica Susairaj (portrayed as Sonia and played by Monica Khanna), a Kannada actress. Their friendship gradually developed into a romantic relationship. However, Maria was engaged to naval officer Emile Jerome Mathew (portrayed as Jacob), whose growing jealousy and possessiveness toward Neeraj eventually led to tragedy.
On the night of May 6, 2008, Neeraj visited Maria’s apartment to help her settle into her new home. When Emile arrived and found Neeraj there, a heated argument broke out. In a fit of rage, Emile fatally stabbed Neeraj.
After the murder, Maria and Emile dismembered Neeraj’s body and disposed of the remains in an attempt to destroy evidence. They replaced the apartment’s upholstery and purchased cleaning supplies to erase all traces of the crime. Meanwhile, Neeraj’s family and friends reported him missing after they were unable to contact him.
The investigation soon focused on Maria. Police recovered bloodstains and other forensic evidence from her apartment. As questioning continued, inconsistencies in her statements, along with the physical evidence, eventually led to her confession. Emile was subsequently arrested.
After a lengthy trial, Emile Jerome Mathew was convicted in July 2011 of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The case remains one of India’s most infamous criminal investigations because of its brutality and the extensive efforts made to conceal the crime.
The case also inspired Ram Gopal Verma’s film Not A Love Story.
