हरियाणा देश के उन राज्यों में से है जहाँ के कुछ गाँवों में आज भी लड़कियों को दबा-कुचल कर रखा जाता है। यहाँ आज भी एक लड़की की शादी किससे और कब होगी, इसमें उसकी मंज़ूरी लेना उचित नहीं समझा जाता। परिवार आपस में फैसला करते हैं और उसके बाद पंचायत की राय ली जाती है। अगर पंचायत प्रस्ताव से सहमत होती है, तभी शादी को मंजूरी दी जाती है।

यह कहानी इन्हीं कुप्रथाओं का शिकार बनी एक लड़की स्मृति (एहसास चन्ना) की है। 17 साल की स्मृति अपने माता-पिता की इकलौती बेटी है। स्मृति के चाचा की शादी देसिका नाम की एक लड़की से तय होती है, जो 55 साल के किसान हुकुम की बहन है। देविका की मुंह दिखाई के दौरान हुकुम और देविका के पिता की नज़र स्मृति पर पड़ती है। वे स्मृति के पिता के सामने एक प्रस्ताव रखते हैं कि उनके घर की लड़की देविका इस घर में आए और इस घर की स्मृति उनके घर चली जाए। यानी स्मृति की शादी उससे 37 साल बड़े हुकुम से करवा दी जाए ताकि उनके परिवार को एक वारिस मिल सके।

लड़कियों के इस लेन-देन की प्रथा को इन गाँवों में “अटा-सटा” कहा जाता है। स्मृति को शादी के दिन तक यह नहीं बताया जाता कि उसकी शादी किससे हो रही है। शादी वाले दिन जब वह पहली बार अपने होने वाले पति को देखती है, तो वह पूरी तरह स्तब्ध रह जाती है।

इसके आगे जो कुछ भी होता है, वह बेहद दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण और दिल दहला देने वाला है।

Haryana is one of those states in India where, even today, girls in some villages are suppressed and denied the freedom to make their own choices. Decisions regarding whom and when a girl should marry are often made without her consent. Families finalize the arrangements among themselves and later seek approval from the village panchayat. If the panchayat agrees, the marriage is carried out.

This story revolves around a 17-year-old girl named Smriti (played by Ahsaas Channa), who becomes a victim of such harmful traditions. Smriti is the only daughter of her parents. Her uncle’s marriage is arranged with a girl named Devika, who is the sister of a 55-year-old farmer named Hukum.

During Devika’s wedding ceremony, Hukum and Devika’s father notice Smriti and propose a shocking arrangement before her family. They suggest that Devika should marry into Smriti’s family, while Smriti should be married into theirs. In simple terms, they want 17-year-old Smriti to marry Hukum, a man 37 years older than her, so that their family can have an heir.

This exchange-marriage tradition is locally known as the “Aata-Sata” custom. Smriti is not even informed about whom she is marrying until the wedding day. When she finally sees her future husband for the first time, she is left completely shocked and devastated.

What happens after this turns into a heartbreaking and tragic story that exposes the dark reality of forced marriages and outdated social customs still prevalent in some rural regions.
