Euthanasia | इच्छामृत्यु
The Story of Sonali Mukherjee
The story begins with a press conference featuring a young woman named Mitali Das (real name Sonali Mukherjee, portrayed by Veebha Anand) demanding justice from the government or permission for euthanasia. The incident takes place in the year 2003.
The Year 2003
Mitali is a talented young girl who becomes frustrated after three boys from her locality repeatedly harass her. When her father and brother confront the boys, they falsely accuse Mitali of having a bad character. One day, when the boys try to harass her again, local people intervene and stop them. About a month later, while Mitali and her family are sleeping on the terrace of their house, the three boys secretly climb onto the roof and throw concentrated sulfuric acid on her face. Mitali’s father is played by Sanjeeva Vats.
Case History
Dhanbad:
This is the painful real-life story of Sonali Mukherjee from Dhanbad, who became the victim of a horrific acid attack in 2003.
On the night of 22 April 2003, three of Sonali’s neighbors — Tapas Mitra, Sanjay Paswan, and Bhrahmadev Hajra — entered her house through the roof while she was asleep with her family and poured concentrated sulfuric acid on her face.
The acid attack completely changed Sonali’s life. She suffered severe facial disfigurement and partially lost her eyesight and hearing.

Sonali had repeatedly complained about the harassment caused by the accused boys. On the day of the attack, one of them teased her in the market and Sonali publicly confronted them. Humiliated by this, the attackers decided to take revenge.
The session court later sentenced the accused to nine years in prison. However, after appealing to the High Court, they were granted bail after three years. Bhrahmadev Hajra was released because he was a minor at the time of the crime.
Sonali and her father approached several political leaders and government authorities seeking justice and financial support for her treatment, but they mostly received only promises and assurances.
Unable to afford her expensive medical treatment, Sonali publicly demanded euthanasia (इच्छामृत्यु) from the government. Doctors estimated that her treatment would require nearly 15–16 lakh rupees.
After her story was featured on Crime Patrol Dastak in August 2012, Sonali received nationwide support and encouragement. She later appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati and confidently won 25 lakh rupees.
